What is going on in here!!? :confused Why am I asked to login to some site when I click on this? thread? rpf weirdness 3.jpg

Art,

You're right, I never considered that you thought that GIANT rotating image, plus the BIG ad on the right would be considered your Feature Area.

I'd never click it myself, and I would imagine you could do a feature area that is much smaller in height. What in the world would posess you to take up such a huge amount of space for this?

Ignorning the huge ad, I can only image it's because you are doing this to get the attention of new users, and really don't care how irritating this HUGE space is for others.

Since you used the other sites again as your excuse, let's compare them and see how you did.

But let's also keep in mind that a forum and a content site, such as you are comparing therpf to are very different things. They are news sites and this matters, because breaking news to them is their bread and butter, so a feature is more important because of the difference in user types. A link to an Oblivion thread that's several weeks old, is not the same thing (much as I like Oblivion).

In the Feature area:

huge an massive feature ad that just links to threads in the forum.
huge ad

SuperHeroHype
Rotating the latest trailers, 6 of them. Big news all the time.
huge ad (broken at the moment)

IGN
Rotating the latest stories, 5. This is where they have thier big news all the time.
no ad

CraveOnline
Really huge rotation to their latest 5 stories.
no ad

I think the issue is you are trying to be like a new site. Therpf is not that animal.

Still need hyperlinks in post to stand out.. At present just looks like text..

Plus need to do something about highlighting threads we've read etc.. So they stand out from new threads/ones haven't read etc..

I don't know about you, but on my screen, threads I've read have a light grey logo next to them and threads that I haven't read have a dark grey logo and the title is bold.

Maybe it's a difference in browser?

When I use my smartphone to access the site directly (not using Tapatalk, which I loathe), I am unable to actually type a response. Any ideas on what might cause that?

Unfortunately no.. Some topics have the darker icon, while majority have the light.. But they vary, as the dark/light icons are on both threads I've read and haven't read.. The text is only in bold on the first page of the new threads list, when it goes to second page and onwards, they are the normal text..

I agree with Philip. Art you don't wanna chase the puck, you wanna think about where the puck is gonna be.

Heh heh. Had a meeting about "where the puck is gonna be" just this evening! Looking forward to it and looking forward to bringing many along for the ride!

I have a question about a board feature, not sure if this goes here or what.

I've noticed VERY commonly that people tend to hit "quote" to respond to specific posts. Lots and lots of times, people will do this in build threads when someone has posted up some photos - they will "quote" a post with a bunch of images, repeating the images over, just so they can put a 2 or 3 word reply after it.

Am I the only one who gets annoyed by this? I know that (very simple!) mods/plugins exist for vB that will convert quoted IMG tags to URL tags. It may even be a stock feature in vB 4, I've not used it myself so I don't know for a fact. Could this be added? Or enabled? Having the same several images be displayed over and over adds nothing positive to a discussion.

I always try to remember to remove pictures from a quote unless I am directly referring to them. It's not that hard to click on it with the mouse and hit the delete key to remove it from my quoted reply.

Must... implement.... LIKES... system!

Can we get a DISLike button also? :lol And on the URL tags for photos, sometimes I will reference specific photos in a thread, is there a way to make just those particular photos show up so other will know what I am referring to? Without having to scroll back up to the original post.

No idea if anyone else started experience this but I can't use ENTER when writing posts. You know in order to change row... :(

So has a decision been made yet about what's going to be done with links? It's getting very frustrating to try and determine what's a link and what's just text.

I agree with that one! I have been making my links bold and underlining them which is an extra step I have to take so that they stand out. We can't change the color of text so that is not an option. I wish we could. That feature would be very helpful.

Also I wanted to put a request in... I don't know if this has been mentioned before but the Private Message quantity monitor is now at the bottom of the page. I just realized my box was full and I got like 20 emails this morning telling me so. My guess is that it sent me a notice every time someone tried to send me a PM. I get about 400 a month so I need to keep a close eye on how close I am to the limit. Then when I get close I download them all as a CSV file. So it would be great if we could move that monitoring bar back up to the top of the page.

One more thing. I don't see a link anywhere that allows us to go to the first unread post of the thread. There used to be one in the upper left corner at the top of the thread. It would only show up if there were unread posts. And I am not sure how to tell which post are unread. Are they marked? Before they had a bright golden yelowish tag on them if they were new. I don't see any kind of markings for that.

I really liked the use of color in the previous theme to distinguish and bring attention to things like that. This theme seems to be so much more... greyscale.

Thanks

Many LIKES systems include a DISLIKE feature. After a good bit of discussion and careful consideration, I dont' think we would be willing to implement a dislikes system as it would only service to divide and create contention. Sadly, as far as this community has come, there are still some ugly little clicques here, and I could see them tooling around disliking all the posts from people they don't like, not due to content, but due to their dislike of the person.
