I gotcha Art. It was partly a matter of education. I can recall times in the past I have been using threads as pictorial reference for a build, remembered exactly what page the pictures were on, and then clicked the page directly from the thread list before. But that's a rare circumstance. My main concern was getting to those new posts, but the icons solve that. Thanks.

Sorry if this is a repeat post. But I keep being logged out. I searched the Junkyard for "patches" to see what's new and I've been logged out three times already.

Thanks,
Malc.

Not sure if it has been mentioned before? When I try to login, I can not tell if the "remember me" check box is checked or not. Other than that, I really liked the dark background of the old version; however, I guess I can learn to like this version as well.
Thanks for the awesome playground.

Now that we have fixed the pagination and bottom "share your fandom" button, it seems like the primary concern centers around the ability to get to particular locations in a thread from the threadlist.

I am a little confused on this because at the moment:

If you click on the thread you are taken to the first post of the thread.
If you click on the icon to the left of the thread title, you are taken to the first new post of the thread (which will be different for each member).
If you click on the datestamp under Last Post By, you are taken to the very last post of the thread.

Is this simply a matter of education or is there something missing?

If one happens to click on the thread title instead of that tiny go to new post button beside the thread title, having the "Go to First Unread/New Post" within the actual thread itself would be very helpful to find the last place read... instead of having to scroll through and clicking pages to figure out the last place I left off...

It is also difficult to try and click the tiny button on an iPhone / tablet...
Also, as I mentioned above, the go to new post option doesn't even exist on the mobile version of the site.

Sorry if this has been suggested (I admit to not searching--I'm on my way out the door):

1] Move/Add thread subscription menu to bottom of page? Every time I subscribe to a thread, I have to scroll back to the top of the page to do so.

2] Move thread navigation to the right side? Right-to-left readers' eyes naturally look there to go to the next page.

Overall, great new look. Thank you for the opportunity to check it out and give feedback!

I don't have the time to go through all 12 pages of this, but here's what I notice:

-> Posts by people on my Ignore list show up in a different color than the rest of the posts (a light blue color), which with this monochromatic theme, kinda highlights them. Kind of defeats the purpose of ignoring those posts.

-> Some people mentioned the theme color, and IMO the problem isn't the light colored background (which I like), but the side bars are dark colored, which makes the contrast between the sidebars and the main content annoying to read. Especially on widescreen monitors.

-> I also saw others mention links being hard to differentiate than normal text.

-> Did the ad service change? I used to get ads that were somewhat topical, now I'm just getting ads for "hot singles" While not NSFW, not exactly what I want seen on my screen if I'm in such a situation. I expect that stuff on skeevy torrent sites, not the RPF.

I Personally Don't like the Color of the Post areas, The old sight was classy and dark, The grey is Odd. Will I be able to change the look in my Settings?
Thanks,
AL

I suppose "classy" like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In my opinion there wasn't an ounce of class in the old Star Wars theme. It was horribly outdated and looked like something out of the 90s (which it essentially was).

For more on my thoughts about this, please see this thread:

It's hard to see what page I'm on in the links at the bottom (ie page 3 of 6) because the colors of the links are so similar. Same with threads I've read vs threads that have new posts. The difference is there, it's just too subtle for me (or maybe its my monitor) Dark gray vs. a slightly less dark gray is harder to distinguish than dark blue vs purple for read/unread threads.

We are definitely addressing all of those issues.

Oh, and are we going to finally be able to post youtube clips in posts? ie [youtube] tags?

You can indeed. Just wrap your videos in the "video" code to embed them!

I just had to say Art, you and the whole team have done an amazing job. It looks STUNNING. I really like the new look of the Forum. Is Larry back now?

Come on. You know that's hilarious.

2. The site is way too wide. My max resolution is 1440x900 and scrolling to the right to read every post severely diminishes my enjoyment of the site. I can't be the only person rocking an ancient monitor. As it is, I can only surf the RPF with my window maximized, and that's no good.

I am not following you on this... You said your max resolution is 1440... the site will work at 1280 and above, so if you are set at 1440, you shouldn't be side scrolling at all. Are you sure you aren't set at 1024?

3. Buttons would be nice instead of just plain text. It's very difficult to distinguish between clickables and text. This I may get used to, though. But it leads me to the biggest problem...

It is unlikely that we are going to move back to actual buttons, but we are going to make links more obvious from elements that are not links.

4. The grey on grey is AWFUL. I've just read through these 6 pages and my eyes are in immense pain. Everything blurs together, there's nothing to focus on, and the brightness is difficult to look at. Bright web pages work well for things like email and the news, but the last thing I want when I'm surfing the RPF for anywhere between 15 minutes and 3 hours is to be staring at a bright screen. Also usually on the site at night, so that creates even more contrast. If you're set on a light background, the text needs to be much darker. But please, please for the love of god Art I'm begging you, give us the dark background back.

We will be darkening the text.

Come on. You know that's hilarious.

You know what is sad? That literally made me LOL.

I am not going to commit to this, but... maybe.

While not really an issue, (Really a request) can we do what we use to by having the first couple and last page numbers posted under the topic name.
IE;

Peter Parker Jacket
Page 1,2,3...77

Why did you put the ads next to the thread list?

Because the thread list is just that, a list. It doesn't require a great deal of horizontal space to achieve its purpose.

it just feels like you wanna push members into the premium membership by minimizing the usuability.

Please explain how usability has been in any way diminished.

And tbh: I'm using an ad blocker (like 80% of all users) what means I just have tons of unused space next to the thread list.

Not sure what to tell you. We have setup the site in a cohesive manner. You are stripping elements out and then blaming us for the empty space you created.

The new RPF makes me sad. Really sad. I was looking forward to it but not to a website that uses like 20% of it's space for ads. Seems like I'll have to write a greasemonkey script to make the RPF at least usuable again :(

Sorry you feel that way.

Also, is this alignment intentional? It looks like a bug but maybe I'm mission something.

Shows up on both my Win7/Firefox 20 box and my Mac/Safari box...

But now it really feels like pushing us in to premium memberships and I think it's normal to not wanna feel pushed into anything.

Nothing has changed. We aren't pushing anything. If members want to support the site, and don't want to see the ads, they are welcome to become a Premium Member. Or, if they don't want to support the site and still don't want to see the ads, as you have pointed out, there are alternative ways to achieve it. The choice is up to you.

I'm glad we have Premium memberships. That way I know I am always SLIGHTLY more important that other NON VIP members. I look down on them from this Digital Domain. (That is all, steps down from my soap box)
