New Judge Dredd movie 1st pics of costume

VERY interesting. I'm really eager to see more of it... I might end up making this costume for the movie release!

I just hope the helmet doesn't look that big from other angles.

Yeah it is a bit oversized , cant see his face well but i think these are test shots so maybe it could be the lighting .I thought it was a fan film at first TBH but its legit .
Apparently the lawgiver is based around a glock 17 . Wanna see what they have done with the eagle as well , hope they keep that on thecostume .

Well it can't be any worse than the first movie and at least the costume looks better. That lawgiver is much larger (not a bad thing). Another reason this will be better: No Rob whatever his name was)

I've decided I don't like how blurry and grainy the image is. It's as if it was taken by a REALLY crappy digital camera! :unsure

Still, it's the only image we have of Urban's Dredd right now, sooo... I resized and cropped it to make a wallpaper for my laptop. Here it is if anyone else wants a copy:

I have a 17" gaming laptop, so I'm running a monitor with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and a resolution of 1920 x 1200. If any of you want a copy of the image resized and cropped for use on your computer, let me know what size you need and I can make it for you. :cool

looks terrible , seriously the classic style off the comic book should be the one used at all times , it dosen't need updating or restyling , it just as it should be .

why do movie makers feel they have to put their own spin on things

I'm not overly crazy about the look of the GIANT helmet, but there are a few things that have me optimistic. The producer says that it will be a "very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie" and that Dredd's helmet won't ever come off. Plus, Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson. :love

I can see that there are still some fans that are possibly ignorant as to the origins of the character and his uniform design.

First, here's a quote of the synopsis for DREDD, which has been in some of the articles about the new movie:
DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.
Now then, let's have a look at how Carlos Ezquerra drew Judge Joseph Dredd in those early strips, shall we?

Even the Statue of Justice depicting Judge Dredd has the same look in those early strips:

The things that jump out at me about Ezquerra's original uniform design are...

  1. More than any other artist, he made the uniform look like a black leather outfit designed to protect a motorcyclist. Hence the protective pads and the helmet.
  2. He drew the shoulder pads at a smaller, more realistic size... just like the ones we see in the new movie! The ones that most artists draw, the ones that Sly Stallone wore in his movie, would limit the movement of a Street Judge's arms more than the smaller, more realistic shoulder pads Ezquerra drew. In real life, that could be dangerous.
  3. Ezquerra drew a smaller, more form-fitting helmet... more reminiscent of the one in the Stallone movie. So the new movie's costume designer clearly preferred a larger take on the helmet, from a different artist.

Also, it's clear that just as in the first movie, the movie-makers are having Dredd use the Lawgiver Mark II. But at least this time it looks closer to the Mark II seen in the comics:

Sure, it's not 100% the same, but that's due to the necessity of the design. Prop-makers start with real handguns and then modify them, so that the gun will be capable of firing blanks on the set. But at least this time they've attempted to make it look more like the Mark II in the comic.

As for the Mark I...

...it's clear to me that the reason we haven't seen that one adapted for the screen is its shape. The only way I can see to make a movie Lawgiver that looks like the Mark I is to use something like a Mauser (a WWI era handgun, famously customized to make Han Solo's blaster pistols for the original Star Wars trilogy) or a Luger (a WWII era Nazi handgun). Those might be harder to find in good, working condition. And they wouldn't look as impressive or manly as the Mark II. ;)

I'm sure I read somewhere that Ezquerra did indeed base the original look of Dredd's uniform on a biker's leathers, and that the Lawgiver Mk. 1 was inspired by a Luger. Regarding the helmet, every artist that's ever drawn Dredd seems to have their own take on it. Brendan McCarthy's flared out at the back like a Samurai helmet, while Steve Dillon's was much more close-fitting (wish I had the pics; but I got rid of my collection years ago!!) One thing that all artists put in are the reflections on the visor, which are meant to look like the lightning flash 'SS' insignia. Here's a few recent examples.

Cheers, Badsprout

Honestly I never saw anything wrong with the costume and props in the Stallone movie. I even liked that version of the Lawgiver more than the comic one. The only issue I had was Stallone only wore it for about twenty minutes of the movie and never again.

We only got about 20-25 minutes of Judge Dredd and then another hour and a half of Stallone doing his Cliffhanger/Cobra/Copland thing in a slightly futuristic setting.

Really excited by this. Okay the uniform isn't comic specific, but the Dark Knight movie costume was very different to any comic Batman and that rocked! I'm definitely giving this a chance as I so want a great Dredd movie. They're starting in the right direction with Dredd's helmet staying on for the entire movie, so here's hoping....

Karl Urban is a tremendous asset to this production too. Really hope it doesn't suck.

i hope its good love the comics, and the last film was sooo bad.

A few tweeks to the look of the uniform and i think theyve got a win

I'm sure I read that this is from a rehearsal. If that is true, the costume may be an early unfinished version.

There have been a couple of posts about this already:

I think it looks encouraging, but it seems this is just a test shoot so the final costume may be a bit different.

Yeah didnt see these till after i had posted , darn thought i had a scoop :cry
Seems the consensus is not enough like the comic yet , tend to agree but lets hope this is a test shot and they may enlarge the shoulders, from this pic the eagle looks very small if it is an eagle and it may be the shoulder pad duplicated.
