Hey all,
Took a few minutes away from a busy schedule of projects to update the site with pics of a new Custom Mannequin Movie Prop Display that we've just completed
This was a fun project and one where both the client and I feel we've really captured a moment from the film.
The furry bodysuit and feet seen here were worn by Maurice Evans as Dr. Zaius during the "sauna scene" in 1970's Beneath the Planet of the Apes.
I created the custom mannequin, built up for girth/body shape and made specifically to fit the costume. With the client's input, I created a pose that would be as natural as possible without adding awkward wrinkles to the fur suit. Further, his arm positioning, lean and head tilt give him just the right attitude and suspicious look to recreate the vibe of the scene.
I added an appropriate looking towel made of a woven, off-white fabric, which was then weathered (though the weathering is a bit washed out in the pics). And the display is nicely completed with a scratch made bench which was all fresh wood and artificially aged for the display.
The client had the replica head (made by "Apemania") which I modified for use in the display. The head required a hair cut and some reshaping work to the neck for fit. The wig and facial hair were almost a platinum blonde when I got it, so I darkened it drastically and also gelled for a bit of a "drippy", matted look to match the body and the scene.
I'm pleased to know the client also owns the original General Ursus from the same scene and I think it's wonderful that those two costumes have ended up together after all these years.
Enjoy the pics!
best,
Tom
