I FINALLY broke down and got a brand new Serger! I posted this over at the SCF, but for those of you who are not members there, I figured I would repost here.

As usual, it's all detailed on my blog. I realize that many folks here are working on pep files and armor, but for those who are interested in more "traditional" style superhero costumes, or even just want a machine that can do a ton of stuff that a regular sewing machine cannot, I highly recommend a serger.

Cool. My wife has a sewing machine and a serger, and I haven't a clue how to use them. :lol

I've had a serger for a few months now, I'm still too afraid to take it out of the box. I'm of the opinion that if I still suck at sewing I shouldn't tempt fate with 2 needles and a blade. It's only a matter of time until I need to use it, though.

My wife says that the serger is not for sewing, but for finishing up edges. I'm seeing your work and thinking to myself.. hmm, seems to do a mighty fine job of sewing to me.

MM: Don't you worry your pretty little head about it

Random Girl #1: Uh, yeah, well I am worried about it....are you...gay?

MM: WHAT? NO! I mean not that there is anything wrong with it. I am just into making replica Superman Returns costumes.

Random Girl #1: Oh Matt! (weeping) I would rather it if you were gay!!!!!

Yeah, by my reckoning, a Serger is really good for two things. Sewing stretchy fabrics, and finishing edges. I don't really have much call for the latter, but it is a MOFO when it comes to stretchy fabrics. Just amazing. Its fast, clean, and just plain amazing to watch.
