Never seen Firefly, thinking of picking it up on BR

Firefly is the greatest thing ever. If a half-dozen bikini clad Victoria's Secret models rang my doorbell, and I was watching Firefly, well...I'd have to ask them to come back when I'm finished.

I rewatched the series again not long ago, and came to a realization. A lot of sci fi shows (various Star Treks, Stargates, Babylon 5) took a couple years to really get a good handle on the characters and situations. Firefly had half a season, and I would put the quality of the characters against the third season of ANY of the shows I just mentioned. Imagine if Joss had a couple years with Firefly.

I feel really guilty for not loving this series. It's all the stuff I love but I have trouble with Whedon style dialog.

Grizzled space mercenaries shouldn't talk like snarky teenagers.

You know a few to ask?

I very much doubt that any tv-show (or movie) will ever replace the #1 spot that Firefly occupies on my list.

You'd tell them to go away?!?! Wrong move. The correct response would be to ask them to join you and convert them to fans.

That being said, you've made a good decision. Firefly's got some of the best writing on television. As has been said, great characters that stick with you and whose joys and pains you feel whenever they hit. Welcome to the Browncoats.

I disagree with that. It's not depressing if you go in realizing that the show was good, but ultimately is limited to what it is. If you take it as a contained whole, rather than a potential ongoing story, it's not bad. Yes, there are loose ends left, but accept what was good that is there, and leave it at that. No need to get depressed about it.

And yeah, Firefly was a great show with a lot of potential, but it wasn't THE best show on TV EVAR and such. Don't fall victim to the hyperbole. It's really enjoyable, but it had its flaws, just like other shows.

And for all those who say "Oh, if only it could've continued", let me remind you of how uneven, say, BSG became towards the end of its run. Yet Season 1 was just top-notch stuff. Or that Heroes season 1 was just mindblowingly good, and then went precipitously downhill afterwards (or so I'm told -- I've never watched Heroes).

I will say that Whedon's shows tend to get better over time. Certainly Buffy and Angel did. It wasn't really until their 2nd or 3rd season that things really took off, although they were quite good before that. Firefly is unique among Whedon shows in that it manages to dodge some of his more annoying tropes (Watch out for flying lumber and stray rounds!), while still remaining exciting.

My whole thing with movies is this, rent before you buy. Sure it may fall into the same genres that you love, but it doesnt mean you'll like it. My example for this is Blade Runner. Everyone in the sci-fi community seems to love it, where as I do not. I'm glad I rented it before I bought it.

Totally.

I just found out about it a year ago, a few friends suggested I watch it.

Its one of my favorite all time shows.

What more do you need to know? ;)

Seriously, it's awesome. I own 3 copies of the DVD set. I watch one and swap out the other sets with friends and family who have never seen it to make fans out of them. I like it *that* much. (y)thumbsup

(And I'm not a "Whedon-ite". I hate Buffy!)

I do the same thing! I have several copies of the DVD set that I loan out to folks. I love turning people on to it!

Out of curiousity, anyone who owns both the DVD set and the Blu-Ray? Is there enough difference in quality and content to warrant buying it yet again? (Yes I know the quality will be better but is it LIGHT years better?)

I would say, most definitely YES. In the BR, the transfer is crisp enough to really see the grain of the fast film stock they often used, especially inside the low-lit Serenity.
