Geez where to begin.... well first of all check out the Mike McMaster blueprints from the 70s... these are not 100% accurate (plus the button layouts and displays DID change throughout the series), but they do provide a good baseline for understanding what you're looking at. Better than the Franz Joseph drawings in the Tech Manual anyway.

i have Mikes prints , of course.
realy i helped him sell his prints at a con back in 78 in Atlanta,
he showed me the secret mistake he made on the Klingon cruiser prints,
anyone ever catch the mistake,,,,its very visible.
