Hey guys - I gotta fabricate this desk for a show I'm working on. It's a really simple design, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the most intelligent way of constructing this piece, keep it both light wight and durable.

Thanks as usual !

The taper is going to be the tricky part. If it didn't taper, then the easy way is to cut the top and bottom half-ovals out of MDF or plywood. Use a series of support pieces (like 1 x 2's) to attach the bottom and top together, then skin the whole thing with 1/8" Lauan. The taper is still possible. It would just require creating a paper pattern of the skin beforehand to account for the curve. Then trace it onto the Lauan, cut it out, and skin.

Another tricky thing is fabricating the silver edge on the edges. I assume you're going for a 1950's kind of feel. I guess you could take some vinyl tubing and wrap it around, then spray paint it silver. But is would probably chip pretty easily.

Thanks mate - that was pretty much identical to what I was thinking for costruction - the curve is going to a pain in the ass though - but Hopefully I can manage.

And for the Metal I was either of covering some kind of Tubing in Aluminum tape or just cutting strips from sheets of metal.
