Need help IDing a knife!

I'm trying to figure out if this is a real knife or a custom piece.

zknife.jpg

It reminds me of a Bud-K type of knife but I flipped through a catalog and didn't find it.

Hmmm..whatever it is I like it.

It's a mish-mash of a Tanto, another knife design that I can't put my finger on, with a guard and handle that reminds me of somewhat of a SOG Bowie.

Definitly not. Thanks for the guess though :)

It looks cheap to me. That's why I'm thinking Bud-K. It looks like the type of single piece, stamped out junk that they make. Could be wrong.

Found this on the Bud-K site. Not a match but a lot of the details are the same. I still thinking it's a Bud-K

Interesting looking knife. It looks like a hand made job.Where did you get the pic? Thanks

I'm going to go with custom. As apollo pointed out, it's a tanto with a drop point or Bowie blade. The leather wrapping looks a bit amateurish, so I doubt it's from a well known designer. The "saw back" looks unuseable also. Is there a better pic available?

I tried looking around and I could not find anything about it.

Maybe it was a one-off made for the film.

Did Zoe carry the same knife in the Series?

I don't think so. I never remember seeing her with one on Firefly at least.

I found something close.

I just ordered one of these. It's a bit short and some of the "teeth" on the saw back will need to be filled in but I think it's as close as I'll get without scratch building one (and I really don't want to do that :lol )

Good find.

Looking at the knife again makes me want to say Jack Crain is getting sloppy but I KNOW that is not the case.

I would assume the knife was made for the Production and made so that it would look crude.

Very crude. Maybe Bud-K is around in the future :lol Looks like the Operative shops there too :lol

Ahem...sorry. I'm not a big fan of poorly made, cheapy knives :)

OK, here's some of the pics from prop store of London of the one from the movie. (If anyone has a problem with me posting these here...... tuff. :lol JK Just let me know, and I'll remove them. :) )

I looked all over for that knife, and I found it at Bud-k. It was died on, but with one less tooth. I got one, and used my dremel to add the notch (tooth)

I looked over at Bud-K, and they changed there stoke again, and they don't appear to have my knife any more, but you can find it on ebay. I know that for sure, because I got one for a friend a few months ago.

Here's mine so far.

Sorry it looks so crappie, I had to sand it so the primer, and paint will stick better. there were makers marks stamped into it on both sides, about where the guard is. I filled them with JB weld, and sanded it smooth. You really would never know they were ever there. :) I've had it setting around like this since May, or so, I've just been to laizy to finish it. I hope to get it painted in the next week or so though.

BTW, The knife comes with a cord wrap on the handle, when you remove it, you'll find 2 pieces of wood under it, save those. You can see in the reference pics that the pieces of wood are under the leather wrap.

Hey Jason,

Your knife does look dead on, nice find. :) By the way, do you know what the name (model) of the knife is, thanks.

I forget the name brand, and since I filled in the makers marks on the knife, so I really have know idea. However, all I did to find one for my friend a few months ago, was:

1. Go to ebay.

2 Set the search feature to search the descriptions as well as the tittles.

3. Enter the words "Knife cord wrap". (The words "black", and "full tang" can help too)

4. Search through the result for something that looks right.

Sorry I can't be more help.

I have scoured eBay and contacted all of my knife account reps and none of them can remember selling a knife like the one used in Serenity

The main difference is that the notches are too wide and there are always an incorrect number of them.

Even the knife Jason1976 found is not 100% accurate

It also obvious that the prop department modified the knife that was used in the movie

Here is the real prop, as you can see the bottom edge of the blade converges toward the point instead of running parallel to it, I have yet to find any knife with this feature, I believe the prop department ground the edges dull and may have rounded the point to make it more safe to carry.

Another thing that bothers me is the notches do not look consistent and they are very narrow, the prop department may have filled in the original notches and reground them to make it look more hand made and less manufactured

Finally, the back angle is steeper and there is only one hole. One the real knife there is a center hole just forward of the visible hole that is used to terminate the nylon cord wrap.

Now I found this knife on ebay for $10 shipped, at first it looks way off.

Here is the link http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

But if you round over the front tip and cut off part of the back and fill in some of the notches it starts to look like the correct knife, I just need to address the notch width issue.

SerenityKnifeMine.jpg

The above photo is Photoshopped but once I have the real knife I will be able to make create a more accurate representation of the knife compared to the real prop and if the geometry works out I will have the notches and the back hole welded shut and then I will cut, grind and notch it to match the real prop.

Wall I agree that mine is not 100%, it's pretty close.

First of all, the pics we are looking at of the "real" knife are from "prop store of London.", and their rubber. I read all the listings they've had, including that knife, and so fare all the ones I've seen have been rubber. That could explain some of the inconsistencies we're seeing.

Second, the one I posted pics of had the one hole, and more properly shaped pommel, unlike many other version of this knife out there. It also has been sanded heavily, and some of the finer details have changed slightly, and it's a bad scan, so those are all reason it my look more off then it is. Also, the notches on mine are very roughly done. Not just the one I made, but the other's that were already there.

I could see them making it from scratch, adding all the groves, or even adding on to the existing number of grooves for some reason. But I find it hard to believe that they would take a metal knife, and fill extra notches. If they wanted less notches why wouldn't they just buy one with less notches? Plus, no mater what they used to fill it with, it would run the risk of chipping later on, and looking awful. Plus it's not just a matter of number of notches. I've handled a number of versions of this knife (the real word knife, not the prop), and all of them have a bit of a falls edge, on the back. That falls edge varies from brand, to brand though. The ones with more notches (7-10) tend to have the bevel (fails edge) coming up further, to were they over Lapp. (the fails edge, and the notches) We can clearly see on the movie version, that the bevel (fail edge) ends before the notches, witch tells you that it's one of the versions that have less notches.

It's very possible that they made it them selves. It seems unnecessary, and a waste of time to me, but it happens. I mean look at the operatives sword, It looks just like the Bud-K sword but it's longer and has more cut outs. In my mind, if you like the look, use what's out there, and if your going to make your own, make it look original, but they don't see to agree.
