Need help/advice on death star turrets...

Hello everyone I am new here here so if this is not the right place to discuss this mods feel free to move...

For some time now I have really been wanting to do a x-wing/death star turret dio. I saw the one Tony Augustine did a few years back and was really impressed!

I have had different ideas of doing Y-Wings, X-wings, tie fighters hell even the MF! But the base element that I am missing is a decent death star turbo laser tower. I have already tried building 2 but the scale/detail just didnt look right...

I have done a search here tyring to find images and other threads about this, and this particular subject doesnt appear to get a lot of attention.

So a little info about what I want to build...

I am planning on doing this is 1/72, using Fine Molds Star Wars kits.

I have been trying to find reference images that show the scale realtionship between the Tower, and X-Wing and the tiles on the sruface of the deathstar. But have not found anything. Is there any solid information on the scale realtionship of these items?

The one that Tony did was nice, but in the films the towers seemed "shorter" than what he had done, and not as wide of a base?

Lastly what kits were used to make the studio model? About how big was it? And probably the biggest question I have, what part was used to make the barrel!?!?!

I am looking forward to any help anyone can give, I would really like to start and finish this project, and right now I feel that I am at a reference road block!

yup, been there done that, as I indicated in my post I wasnt able to find what I was looking for. Besides the threads/posts were a bit old, I didnt know how this forum was about posting in old threads, I have been on some where that is looked down on.

Still looking for a little direction here...

Hi Ashton, that dio was something I made from years back. I'm glad there's still people who get a kick out of it still.
The only bit of reference I had at the time that showed the size difference of the tower to the X-Wing was this picture from 'The Star Wars Sketchbook' by Joe Johnston.

You can see that I got inspiration from the above drawing and used a little 'artistic interpretation'. In no way is it accurate to the one in the movie. I'm just not 'wired' for researching and locating exact kit parts as I prefer to make it up as I go along...just like Indy.

THanks everyone for your post/information/advice. Tony that pick is great! I can work w/ that pretty easy.

I think the hard part is going to be replicating the barrel. I know w/ your tony you just used a pen I think you said.....I wonder if I can scrathc one barrel and cast it?!?

Any I will use this pic to determine size w/ a 1/72 X-Wing.

Since there were several different tower heights... build the one (or two) that make sense to you. based on the on screen shots I'd say that the two trench towers were the "shorter" ones based on this pic that shows them barely 1/2 the height pf the trench they sit in...

Can anyone help me ID the parts circled in this photo? The base on the cannons look like it could be a turret to a tank or something.

No probs. I only found it cos I posted a wrong ID of a Scorpion tank and was able to search for Scorpion .

Are any of the blocks on an ICONS X-Wing base supposed to represent the lower section of a laser tower? Looking at the base from the front there is a block on the right and one mid upper left that could be used. I'm thinking about building one or two in scale to the base. I wouldn't be able to use kit parts unfortunately at this scale. Thanks for the great reference pics and threads.

been able to identify many of the parts, still looking for some help w/ the parts in this picture. I am also looking for some pictures of the tower from the rear, what is on the top, behind those little scoop, fin thinkgs?
