Na'vi prosthetic

A little heavy on the detailing, imo. A trend I've been seeing on many pieces from many people lately. I would definitely smooth things out a bit more as I don't recall them having such large pores in the movie, but looked rather smooth skinned.

this is a picture of the clay sculpt, the piece is going to be cast in silicone.

when making prosthetics in silcone, its common practice to punch up the detail as alot of it gets washed out due to the translucancy

Ah, I didn't know that. Thanks for the explanation. :thumbsup

Alot of the detail is lost in translation when cast in silicone, some artists go heavier than this.

Looks fantastic fettster!

stunning.
kinda wish i did some skin texture on mine, but they were fairly smooth skinned so i think ill get away with it.

ive learned a ton just looking at the pictures of yours for the next time i try sculpting.
beautiful work!

Thanks very much, just keep at it. The main problem with not doing skin texture is that unless your prosthetic covers your whole face, you will never be able to blend the piece in with your own skin because YOU DO have skin texture.

You may be able to hide the edges but as soon as the light hits you face, the piece will stand out.

Having said all that, yours is a very good piece for a first prosthetic

In another thread you mentioned cutting the clay with vaseline. Would you mind going into the process a bit? I've never heard of that before, I've got a few pounds of nsp hard that I wouldn't mind softening up a bit.

Again, great job on that. The forms are very organic and subtle.

No problem, you just melt them both down and mix them together. Just be very carefull when melting clay as it burns like lava and you can't get it off so wear protection

Any quick recipes for that clay softening technique. I attempted to sculpt my own navi, but I can't imagine Chavant being able to pick up those porous details, and thats just with the medium density clay. :cry

Nsp medium is great for picking up detail as its pretty firm. if your using a solvent to soften out the details and its washing away try adding your textures then polishing over with a brush and plain ole talc powder. it works a charm.

superb detail on this mate.

I'd love for you to get the commissions on the 1:1 bust, this appliance is a great indication to how good they would be :)
