Re: National Treasure 2 - "Booth's Derringer" BUILD THREAD!!!

I will get a finished Replica around the next time, I found one for 30€, thats about $40-50 I think...

Re: National Treasure 2 - "Booth's Derringer" BUILD THREAD!!!

I am interested to see how it turns out. I would like to try tackling this project, though I might not be able to make mine as accurate. Will you be doing the carving on the handle as well? If so, how do you plan to accomplish that? Any pictures of the carving pattern?

The carving is called 'checkering', which you can see on a lot of gunstocks and done so with 'checkering tools'.
I was able to figure out the correct pattern by researching other Philadelphia Derringers from the same time period, which all pretty much have the same exact pattern.

Ever check out this site? These guys offer an exact replica of the gun. However, they are a bit pricey. They ask a little over $500 for it.

Derringer is listed toward bottom of page with a video showing how it is loaded and fired.

Breathing a little life back into this dormant thread, although this is about 15mm too short to be considered an accurate Booth Derringer, I'm happy to think this is a decent enough addition to the other Lincoln assassination items I have..

That's funny. I was just checking this thread last night. I want to build the same kit as Relicmaker. Any updates B? Or do you want to send me the kit? ;)

Re: National Treasure 2 - "Booth's Derringer" BUILD THREAD!!!

Great gun Mark, I've always really liked the Deringer! I have a bunch of photos I will email to you, you might have seen a few of them, but hopefully some will be new to you!

I was hoping to have this done by now and ready for the prop party this weekend, but you know how I love my sittin' around time.:cheers
Hopefully, I'll have it done before this summer...

If I do decide to sell it, it's yours!:cool:thumbsup

I know it's been a long time since posting on here but, hope you gents don't mind me making a little addition to a potentially EPIC thread. Managed to acquire, or more accurately put, was gifted a 'John Wilkes Booth Derringer' kit. Just saw it for what it was, and without searching for additional reference material (shame on me), currently have it almost range ready. The images that follow depict some of the highlights of the 'before' condition and a few of the piece in its current state. Hope y'all enjoy them.

Steel condition pre-treatment.

After some adjustments and sanding; test fit of all the main components.

Test fit again post steel treatment and grinding off locking pin.

Just a littler teaser pic of what I have, right now. :) Based on the reference images that I see before me, it looks like I may need to rip this one back apart and start fresh. ...which ain't nuthin' new... :devil

Tommin: I've been checking this thread for some time, looking for more details from Brenton/RelicMaker. I too have one of these kits, and hope to complete it -- with some corrective modifications -- into something resembling a duplicate of JWB's weapon, by the date of the fatal sesquicentennial.

My first problem: I ordered the replacement hammer as Brenton suggested, and found that it is about 1/4" short. Has anyone had the same experience? I wonder if a different hammer is being shipped in the several years since his post.

As for my status, I'm well behind you, having just received the parts for one kit from two different GunBroker auctions (huh?!). I'm looking forward to sharing my projectedly slow progress... but by April, right?

Re: National Treasure 2 - "Booth's Derringer" BUILD THREAD!!!

I'm always hoping to find the time to finish this up. A lot of times, I forget I even still have this! :lol

Anyways, the hammer I suggested using is for a different kit that is hard to find, but is the most accurate to make it look like the JWB derringer.
There were about 3 different sizes of the derringer made back then that looked exactly alike. JWB had the middle size between the smallest and the biggest. The kit we're using is actually of the larger model. So, this derringer we're making will never be made for actual shooting, since we're replacing a hammer not made for it.
This will only be a display piece...

Thanks for the clarification. It looks like the one I bought is a dead end, but I'll keep on looking.

Gotcha, thanks, and that clarifies everything.

We're headed in very different directions, as I'm starting with the CVA kit, and will be cutting both wood and metal. The CVA will _never_ be an exact replica of Booth's pistol* due to size and other issues, but there are some promising corrections that can be made that will make this a reasonably accurate replica, while still remaining a functional firearm.

* Deringers like Booth's were commonly sold in pairs, though no deringer corresponding to Booth's has been discovered. Last winter, I found a Deringer on GunBroker that exactly -- by the dimensions, barrel description, and photographs of the engravings on both sides of the pistol matched those of Booth's weapon. I am sure that these were mass-produced pocket pistols, but the coincidence was uncanny. Oh, and the price was too much for me :(

Yeehah! It may very well not be a dead end, I think that this hammer is going to work!

I'm hoping to have an update soon, but we'll see...

And if it fails, I'll let you know about that, too, :(
