Mystery NERF gun dated 2001

Fellow forum members,
I bought this Nerf gun from a local Value Village thrift store for $6.00 and because it was so unusual and it has quite a potential for a cool paint steam-punk style. If it is vintage, should I just keep it as is ??

i have the same one only new color scheme, I've seen them sell online for $10-20, don't think its worth much on that end to be considered rare. I believe its just called the rapid fire, plenty on ebay.
