My take on the Sebastian Chess set

Was able to get a deal on E-bay for a British Birds chess set which prompted me into this build.

The set came in by mail and 8 pieces were broken as well as a few missing bits. I was able to repair using some molding clay for the missing parts and stick the broken pieces back together with contact cement. I added some oxblood to the brown pieces to get closer to the right colour.

I know its not the right set so I will be on the lookout for the one with the wrens and the different King and Queen.

While walking my dog I saw this mid century piece of furniture on the curb and couldn't resist. Perfect size and the look seemed to fit in the BR scheme of things.

I cut and routed a 20 in square piece off the top so I could recess in a piece of 6 mm glass which I covered with frosted covering, cut out 2.25 in squares and painted the clear parts with a sand colour spay paint using a template.

The table was sanded and refinished with Minwax. I added some green felt to where the glass was going to sit. Finally I added a white tablet to house and reflect the LED strip which I can control using a small remote, change colours, dimmer etc.

Birds Chess set: $55
Paints: $20
Table: Free
Glass: $35
LED kit: $36
Green felt: $4

Total: $150 CAD / $120 USD

Happy camper, going to play a game tonight with BR Running in the background along with a glass of Johnnie Walker :)

Thank you for the STL file. Although I don't have a 3D printer maybe I can find someone to print them for me. Could be an alternative to buying a full kit but my King and Queen do differ from the Hoyle set which is about $500 CAD. There is a Ebay seller that offers what seems to be a recast for a bit under $200 which is pretty fair. Will see. Thanks !!!

Oh, well, then maybe I should just do the king and queen also. My quick and dirty copies are generally not spot on, but they're free. I do them from scratch and in the detail level for the time I allow. Some people are happy with general accuracy if it's free.

jintosh to the rescue(y) you are a star;)

I have Monday OFF from work. I think I can turn out the king in a day and post it. I've already reserved a spot for the King and Queen in my STL section, and moved the wren to that part of the thread too.

Okay, I worked on it off and on for a fair part of the day. I've decided to finish it in the near future instead of tonight.

Here's my work so far.
Wow that's very impressive ! So do you draw it from scratch or do you use some kind of scanning technique to come up with such fast results ?
I went to see the set being sold on E-Bay and so far your work is spot-on.

Do you think making a Saturn Lamp using 3D printing would yield a good looking result ?

If we could find a way to cast / fabricate the metal parts and have clear / frosted resin for the lamp parts and refinish them it could make a great prop. I have been looking at Saturn Lamps for years only to see their prices climb to the levels they are today. Rare and very pricey.

I know I would be in if ever somebody was to do a project run.

If you can imagine a sculptor working with clay, he would make a blob of clay that looks like the eagle, and then start defining the detailed parts.

So, I use a online free program called TINKERCAD. I make a blob that is eagle shaped, and then start adding and refining details in Zbrush. It saves a lot of time making the basic shape in tinkercad.

As to a Saturn lamp....when I Google that, it comes back as a lamp that looks like Saturn. With some lamps being $50. You really couldn't print it yourself in any kind 3D printing and add the other parts to make it functional for much less than $50.

Or is the Saturn lamp you speak of, different in some way?

I am referring to the 1939 World's Fair Saturn Lamp that sits on Deckards piano in the 1982 movie. It also appears it an episode of Twin-Peaks I think. The most desirable version is made of green vaseline glass.

Okay, a specific Saturn lamp. I have a printer that can print up to 14 inches in diameter. What parts of this are translucent? What parts are solid color? Does the coned base light up?

Height: 11.5 in. (29.21 cm)
Diameter: 8 in. (20.32 cm)

The Globe is made of two pieces of glass that form Saturn, one piece is the half sphere with the ring band the other is the other half. There is a stepped metal base in which the light fixture is attached and the two mounting points that hold the sphere together.

So the Globe that makes Saturn is translucent and the base that sits below the metal bracket is translucent.

Only the Globe light up.

I think I can find some pics of the lamp disassembled.

Sweet work man! Now if only someone could afford Tyrell's La Bottega de Visari chess set and play the other side, our lives would be complete.

By the way, if anyone wants to play Sebastian vs Tyrell on a board, I did a video of it a few months ago. (Pardon the shameless plug)
