Hello everyone... I thought I would share a project that I have been working on for waaaay to long... I started many moons ago, searching for authentic materials, pins, chains, etc. and finally was able to finish my Star Trek III Admiral Uniform (Monster Maroon)... I say Star Trek III because the wrist braid style.
I worked hard to find the same materials - the jacket is made of of high-grain wool elastique (this was originally $78 per yard, but due to a pricing error and a salesperson who was happy to help, I got a great deal on 10 yards for $400). I twice died the material, first a maroon color, and then darkened it with a combination brown-cherry red dye to achieve the desired color. The pants are made of the same type wool. I ensured that all the grains of the fabric were vertical, keeping the look consistent. The jacket is fully lined as in the films, so the front flap can be opened, and the inside can as well (revealing the red color overlap). The piping is all gold soutache in the same measurements as listed in the Roddenberry guide. Like most, I used the Roddenberry patterns, but had to modify them significantly to work properly with my frame (I have a rather large barrel shaped chest). The belt is pig-skin leather, sewn, and the boots are FLORSHEIM. THe undershirt is heavy weight jersey with filling. I was able to find the chain with the assistance of a couple RPF members, and the pins are Roddenberry. The Admiral braid was from Xscapes, but I had to purchase additional lengths to get it to wrap completely...
This is a very good first effort, and I think the next ones (if I am crazy enough) will be even better... I am currently starting work on the under vest for the larger away-jacket and a custom dress-uniform for TWOK style...
I would love to hear what you all think....
