My Star Lord Build

Ok so like many others I'm putting together a Star Lord costume, and am shooting for Halloween so should have plenty of time to get everything done. This is the first build I've posted (I did some iron man stuff last year but haven't got around to posting that yet). Anyways I'm going to try to put in as much detail as possible, explaining how I'm going about making my props and costume pieces, to hopefully help others who are doing this, especially those who might be somewhat new to this stuff, like me. Everything I'm making isn't going to be 100% screen accurate, but it will be fairly close for the most part.

So to start off, I'm going with either the vest/short jacket costume, with no mask, since I'm not going to want to wear that out all night for Halloween (I'll probably make one later though, but thats last on the list). I still haven't bought my jacket/vest as more and more of these are popping up daily and I'm in no rush to get one. Also I've seen on eBay that the jackets have gotten closer to the actual jacket used, and vests are starting to pop up, so I figured it cant hurt to wait a little longer to see what I'm actually going to want to buy.

For the undershirt I purchased this off of amazon in denim blue:

For the pants I bought these off of eBay:

I've seen others get these and while they aren't 100% correct, they work for me. Keep in mind they are a bit tight. I'm regularly a 32 and had to get a 36 in order to fit them comfortably, although I do lift regularly and my legs are probably bigger than average. The waist on these is adjustable though so I could tighten them around my waist.

For the shoes and spats I bought a pair of rubber boots that go about halfway up my shin and will be covering these with various leathers and such to get the desired look (more on this once I start this part of the project). I'll be attaching the rockets to these, which I'm making out of foam and plumbing parts found at lowes. Here's what I have for those so far:

I'll also be making a belt with the leftover leather from the spats using painted clay for the buckle (more on this once I start it).

For the blasters, I went with a repaint of the nerf guns like I've seen a lot of people do so far. The process for that and pictures are posted further down in the thread.

The prop I finished first was the walkman. I made mine out of foam, since I couldn't find any similar ones on eBay and didn't want to buy the real thing for $500+. Here's the final product:

To make this I first glued a few pieces of foam together (using E6000), to get the desired thickness and then cut out a rough shape.

Then to get the front right, I printed a picture of Mixtape Vol 1 and glued that to a thin piece of foam, which I then covered with a thin piece of plastic I cut out of a transparent folder.

I glued this, with another piece on top of the plastic, and two more pieces to the front of my foam brick to create the dividing lines present on the front face of the walkman. Then using some sandpaper I smoothed all the edges, to get this:

Then I carved out the buttons and other features on the side, using a soldering iron, and cut out a few additional pieces to make the buttons that protrude out a bit more.

I then sealed the whole thing with glue, starting with a watered down glue, and working up to straight glue with no water, and covered it with black pastidip.

Then I painted it using the following paints and added a clip to the back that I took off of a tape measure.

To finish it off, I free handed a small arrow on the front and purchased the sony and walkman decals off of Etsy:

Then I added some eyelets to make the headphone jacks, and wrote the words on the top and sides of the walkman with a black permanent marker and white acrylic pen.

The headphones I could only find on UK sites, I got mine from UK Amazon. They were called lightweight school headphones I believe. The model number is A070B and they are made by soundlab.

So thats it so far, more to come soon!

Nice job on the Walkman! I've been considering building one myself…I really want an original, but I can't bring myself to spend so much on a real TPS-L2. Thanks for linking to those decals, I didn't even know those existed. I will definitely be purchasing a set for my own build.

So I finished my first blaster today. I started by taking it all apart, taping it up, and painting the various pieces with either the black or metallic paint, depending on the piece.

I then made it look worn using black acrylic paint and silver rub n buff. I spread a little bit of the black paint around on a piece of cardboard with a sock and then made strokes back and forth on the silver parts of the gun. I then did the same thing with the rub n buff, but also added some of this to the black parts. I then used some carbon fiber wrap I got from Pep Boys to cover the handle. I started with a big piece and covered as much as I could with this single piece by heating the wrap with a hair dryer and bending and stretching it around the handle. An x-acto knife was also very handy for this part, to cut around specific areas. Then I filled in the gaps with a couple more pieces. Finally I sprayed the ends with the purple and blue paints to get the burn marks, and shaped them a bit by covering parts up with more of the rub n buff and black acrylic paint, using the same technique as before.

Here are all the paints I used.

Thanks! And yeah I couldn't spend that much to get a real one either. I think the foam was a good choice, it looks pretty real especially from a distance.
