My sons costumes - Ironman Mark III & Link

Long time lurker and here is what I have so far, trying to make halloween/D-Con costumes for my sons this year. I used to sew renn fest type cosplay stuff and a little latex so this should be fun. I am on a budget and under time restraints.

My 11 yr old wants to be Link from Skyward Sword. So far I only have the shield made.

My 6 yr old wants to be Ironman Mark III. I will not be trying to go all out like Indiefilmgeek did, although I loved the Ironman and Cyclops. As I said before I am on a budget. I started out using the 12 mm foam floor mats like I used on the shield and my Warmachine helmet turned out great, but the Ironman was to big for him. Luckily I read Indiefilmgeeks thread before I started over on a smaller scale and used 3mm foam from Hobby Lobby. Much better.
These pieces are done using Sharkheads pep files with JFcustoms edit and Dancinfools armor files with JFcustoms edit. Without these files and watching Stealths videos none of this would be possible. Here is what I have so far,.. not much addmitedly.

First helmet was to big, second still a little large but better with the 3mm foam.

The above pic is with 3 coats of Mod Podge and 2 coats of Epoymite 101

Then I also have the arms ready for Plasticoat

Question: I feel I am doing well so far with a few mistakes along the way, my question is,.. I am trying to scale the boots,. so far on all the piece I am able to stay at .95 overall scale, but the boots start at a solid forty and look right on the pages but when I scale them to .95 they are a pin ***** on one page. Is there a way to change that, like restart the scale at a positive one and go from there? Its not killing me and I can work with it, its just one of those little hiccups I have with Pepakura.
Also was real upset with myself for letting the guy at Home Depot talk me into Adhesive spray because he had never heard of Adhesive promoter. lesson learned.
Thanks all and I hope you like these as I go.

Very cool! You're a great dad! But, when I read the title I thought you were making costumes based on the old show "My Three Sons". I clicked out of pure curiosity!

I count only 2 sons in the original post?

The I'M helmet does look a little large as you stated, the Link shield looks amazing!

Re: My Three Sons Costumes

I call shenanigans on this thread!!
You stated THREE sons but only two costumes.

So, what's the third? Great work on the link shield an IM costume so far! I'm pretty jealous of that shield!

I even started hearing the theme song.

Ditto.

I even started hearing the theme song.

Double ditto.

:lol

Nice job with the craft foam there! I'm doing a Stormtrooper costume for my 5 year old. The stuff is great to work with.

Re: My Three Sons Costumes

Great job. Is this for halloween?

Yes, and for Atl Dragon Con if I can get em done in time.

My third son is 4 and he is still between Capt America and Hulk.

LOL, I hear it all the time.

Made the Capt America helmet for the 4 yr old, It was a little tight.

Thanks for the replies

Re: My Three Sons Costumes

LeDragon,
I am puzzled by the double-angle cut on the shield (grey ones on the top and bottom). Especially round double-angle cut on the border of the yellow parts.
Do you mind sharing on how you do it?

Thank you

Re: My Three Sons Costumes

I was curious how Robbie, Chip and Ernie costumes were going to look!

Re: My Three Sons Costumes

Another one who thought this was for the TV show.

I also would like to know how you got the bevels on the shield. You mentioned using 12mm foam for some parts, and I think I almost see a seam line on the top pieces before painting. But even if those were the materials - what did you use to get the cuts so clean?

Re: My Three Sons Costumes

I HAD to click on this , since I looked just like Ernie when I was a kid. Well I hope for yor sake the last guy picks Cap. Great work so far

Great work though on the costumes :thumbsup

Re: My Three Sons Costumes

That Skyward Sword shield is awesome! Well done. The Ironman is also coming along really well :) If you don't mind my asking how old is your boy who is going at Ironman? And about how tall? I'm looking at making up a suit for my 8yr old stepdaughter and just pondering scaling sizes.

All the embelishments around the shield were made from 3mm foam, the ones with the deep angles were 2 layers of foam hot glued together. Tried the 12mm but it was to hard to get the whole thing smooth, it would start out good then start to get that shredded look.
The 'bolts' around the edges were made from cabinet handles from Home Depot

Scaling has been pretty good so far, Logan is 6 and he is a lankoid so the suit downscales pretty good. He is 4'3" and I have been using .95 scale in pepakura.

I used a regular exacto knife held at a sharp angle. You can see the double layers in the pic above pretty easy.

Need to change the post title, my kids are more into Phineas and Ferb.

Re: My Three Sons Costumes

Started working on the boots the other night. Using Dancing fools modded pep files and it only comes with the boot covers so having to improvise. Times like this I love costuming because its a makes you think and feels great when it works out. Most importantly Logan likes them. The only problem I am really having now is this,.. I can tell that my son gets so excited that I feel he is not being honest with me on wether things feel right or fit good because he is scared I am going to give up and not make it. I feel like I could have broken glass in the boots and he would say, "They fit great, Daddy."

Pics of boots. Its not much but they have heel and arch support somewhat.

Also , Using my oldest son Cales Deadpool costume from 3 years ago for the base or 'undergarment' of the Ironman costume. Should work out great.

Helmet is starting to look out of scale so might have to make another. It was the first thing I made with the thinner foam anyway, my ginea pig helmet. Still need chicago screws for the elbow joints also.

Let me know what you think. Everyone here has ben such an inspiration to me with your freekin amazing costumes. Thanks for all you have done with this hobby and I am so happy to be back making costumes after all these years.

Going to use docholiday78 s tips for painting and keeping it kinda flexable.
