Hello Everyone,
This post is a big step outside my comfort zone, but I’m ready to share my story and ask for help to bring my projects to life. I have Asperger’s (I don’t think they call it that anymore), which makes putting myself out there like this tough, but I’m determined to move forward or risk leaving my work unfinished.
About six years ago, I dove into 3D printing with a dream to build an accurate Ghostbusters Muon Trap. I found a popular design online, printed it, and was thrilled - until my eye for detail (a blessing and a curse) spotted inaccuracies. My drive for precision, something I deeply enjoy, pushed me to create my own version. With some 3D modeling experience but new to CAD, I learned Fusion 360 while obsessively researching every detail of the original Ghost Trap prop. After six months, I had a design I was proud of - one I believe could be among the most accurate ever made.
I joined a fan forum and connected with a talented maker to collaborate on the trap’s functionality while I focused on accuracy and printability. Initially, it went well, but over time, their focus shifted to other projects and a business venture. I tried to keep up, starting new projects they suggested, but these often stalled as priorities changed. Meanwhile, I refined the trap, took trips to Seattle to photograph the original prop, and worked on other designs across various franchises. I also juggled non-3D projects, as I’ve always been a bit of a “Jack of all trades.”
Over the years, the constant pivoting and delays took a toll on my mental and physical health. I felt stuck, especially since my goal was never about profit but about creating something amazing that others might love too. Our visions diverged, they wanted to make their kits widely available to all makers, while I hoped for an exclusive partnership focused on our designs. We even got close to a licensing deal with Sony, but it fell through, and they stepped back due to legal concerns. I respect their choice, but it left me with a nearly complete trap and dozens of other designs waiting.
Recently, I spoke with Ghostbusters cosplayers at a convention who suggested I tackle the electronics myself. I’ve considered it, but programming and electronics aren’t my strengths or passions. I also approached another business for collaboration, but their suggestion to adapt my work to their designs they were creating for a completely different project/goal didn’t feel right.
So, here’s why I’m posting: I’m looking for a passionate, respectful collaborator skilled in electronics to bring my projects to life. I want someone who shares my goal of creating accurate, functional, and awesome designs, not with the goal being profit, but for the joy of making something great. I’m open to working on your passion projects too, across any franchise, as long as we respect each other’s time, vision, and dedication. I want to focus on the joy of creating high-quality designs across various franchises, driven by our passion for making awesome things - if others enjoy them too, that’s a great bonus, but prioritizing profit, isn’t my primary focus. Or, to quote Field of Dreams, ‘if you build it, they might come?’
This is scary for me—sharing unfinished work and asking for help isn’t easy. But I don’t want my designs, which I’m incredibly proud of, to stay locked in a folder forever. If you’re interested in collaborating or know someone who might be, please comment or send me a PM. I’ve summarized my story to keep it concise, so feel free to ask for clarification. Thank you for reading,I truly appreciate your time and consideration.
