My protocol head... metalised.

I got a raw protocol head a while back and finally got around to trimming it, vacuum metalising it and just finished the LED wiring. I ended up painting the eye grills with gold spray paint and gold leafing them to make them shinier as I didn't think it would really matter.

Most of my collection is made up of antiques and artifacts... but I'm hoping this will end up blending in as it is an Art Deco design. ;)

Kind regards,

looks like a one piece zorg head........so not one from my hands ,probably a dishman effort

Looks awesome! I'm in need of getting one metalized also..can you give us some details as to where and $. Thanks. It looks very awesome!

Was the original fiberglass, resin or something else?

Yes, details please. Did you have to do much prep-work before metalizing? Did you prime it first?

The head I got from an RPFer... it was a one-piece resin. It needed a little trimming and sanding work before sending off to the metaliser. I had it metalised by http://vacuummetalisers.co.nz/ for around $115NZD (which at the current exchange rate is around $90 USD). They did all the clean-up for me. The finish is nearly flawless... there is a little imperfection on the forehead, but it is hardly noticable. This flaw actually brought the price down a little for me. :) The eye grills were spray painted gold and gold leafed. All in all, I'm very happy with it. :D

Kind regards,

I've finally built a stand for my 3PO:

The base is an old light fixture and the tube is from a broken-down vacuum cleaner... both found in my garage (I can't throw anything away!). ;)

I don't know how I missed this thread. I had my 3PO head & armour, vacu-metalized by a company in Sydney back in June 08. Cost $1170NZD.

With me spending 6 months out of the year in England. I haven't had the chance to put 3PO on a mannequin. He's still packed up in various storage boxes.

That looks great.

Having tried hard to get the best from VM a few years back I'm all too aware of how difficult it is to get a quality finish

Cheers
