My new Trek XI communicator prop replica.

So, I passed on the phaser and the tricorder, but thought, "Hey, that communicator looks REALLY close. All it needs is a good mod...!"

So, here we are. I replaced that purple dome with a solid, half, clear acrylic cabochon. I had to get a 1 1/8" cabochon and sand it down till it would seat, then I wet sanded the scratches out of it and buffed it out clear. The next step was to seal the side seams. I then filled in the screw holes (Won't be going back into it) sanded off the battery thing and the made in China, blah, blah, blah stuff and gave it a good paint job. The last one is a low quality, no sound .avi from my digital camera, but it shows off the cabochon in action.

I present to you, a prop replica.

That looks not bad! :cool

I thought the comm toy was still too THICK though compared to the real thing.. and it had a black backplate.

EDIT: Beat me to the punch :lol

Looks great. The back's suppose to be black/dark gray like the lid though. You can see it in the photos or the real deal that was on display a while back.

You know what, I studied those quite a bit before I started, but I concluded that the "black" part looked like a shadow on the wall since there should be SOMETHING to identify it on the other pics. So I skipped it. May be wrong, we'll soon find out.

Yeah I had to agree with Aquaman. You can hardly see the thing in the movie. It's too shaky, also the actress grab it pretty firmly and covered most of it.

I still think they should have extras on each DVD that show a 360 of all the main props in that certain show. (Either that, or have a scene were they show the prop directly to the camera. :lol )

Check out the 4th pic that Phase Pistol posted. You can see it pretty clearly.

The fourth pic is what convinced me it's a shadow. Follow the contour all along the back of the comm. It doesn't line up with the back of the comm. Also, if there was a different colored back piece, it SHOULD wrap around the edges a little bit! Every picture should have SOME different color showing. Again, I may be wrong, but this is what I believe right now.

I doubt it is a shadow cause if you look at the Uhura earpiece next to comm in same shot, the shadow it casts is MUCH lighter grey.

regardless, your piece looks great and should the black back be confirmed I imagine it will be easy enough to paint it on.
