This year I wanted to save some money and make my wife a Christmas present. We both love Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban is our favorite film, so I thought a replica of the Marauder's Map would be in order. I know, you can get a replica from the Noble Collection, but I wanted to spend very little on this piece.
I grabbed a good pic from the movie, cropped it, stretched, cajoled, and fiddled with it until I had a pretty clean version. I printed it on tabloid paper (sized to what I feel are the correct proportions) and used a light box to trace the image onto a piece of aged parchment bought from Arizona Art Supply (The best place in Phoenix to buy art supplies.) I traced the image in pencil and then went over the tracing with a brown Staedtler marker.
I also made the case. The base is simply black foam core with wood bits and pieces that I had lying around. I thought that it's pretty good for my first ever replica prop.
To make the gift special I make a fictional letter from the Minister of Magic explaining why the Marauder's Map was being sent to my wife and included it in the package.
I guess now I have to start thinking about the next project.

P.S. I also posted the pics at my blog http://magicalgoods.blogspot.com/
