My Mad Max Road Warrior costume - The Replica Warrior finally makes its debut!

Max Replica

Well-Known Member
I was at the Anaheim Comic Con yesterday, standing near my friend's replica Mad Max car and handing out flyers to promote this year's Wasteland Weekend (http://www.wastelandweekend.com)

My costume wasn't 100% finished but I decided to wear it anyway. It is still missing a knee pad. Other than that, it's done (well, minus one or two tiny details that no one but me would notice anyway). So here it is. I apologize that I didn't think to get pictures of the back of the outfit as well. This wasn't my costume's "official" debut since it isn't 100%, so I'll have many more and better pictures when I go to Comic Con 2010 in San Diego and such.

Once the knee pad is added, this will be the first fully screen accurate Mad Max 2 replica costume ever created. It took a lot of time and a lot of dedicated fans' assistance to put it all together. I'm just the lucky guy who gets to wear it.

Full details of how all of this costume was created coming in the months ahead. (Because the goal is for more people to be able to make their own accurate costumes of course)

Outstanding work on your Max costume! I've been researching like mad lately for a 1:6 scale version I've been working on for over a year, and I think yours is the coolest looking fan made costume I've seen yet. I plan to start on a costume of my own from the first film as soon as I've saved up enough cash for the leathers. I'm definitely interested in any further pics and build information you plan to share in future. :cool

Btw, I was just wondering what binoculars you ended up using. The reason I ask is because there seems to be some speculation as to the exact make and model that was used in MM2. I'm trying to make my 1:6 scale Max figure as SA as possible, so that information would be extremely helpful right now, if you wouldn't mind sharing it. Thanks in advance! :)

If you have any specific questions for your 1/6 scale version feel free to PM me. I basically know this costume down to the last stitch, though there are still some things that nobody knows for sure yet because they just don't appear clearly onscreen or in promo shots, or because the original has been hard to track down and ID - Such as the binoculars.
I've never seen anyone track down the exact same pair of binoculars. I've looked at hundreds of photos online and haven't found them. The trick is that brass tube in the middle. Most binoculars that have brass are ALL brass, meaning that where the black parts wear away or fall off, you'll see brass underneath. Max's is definitely silver metal, except for the middle part. That's why I suggest people just find a similar pair of binoculars and just modify them.
A close look the binoculars also reveals that one of the eyepieces is missing as well as one of the rings around one of the lenses. His binocs also have a thin leather strap (visible when he's using them to look down on the compound).
I thought of getting in touch with some groups that collect binoculars and are experts in IDing vintage pairs to see if they could help, but I simply modified a different pair to look SA and left it at that.
It's also worth nothing that you can be SA WITHOUT the binoculars, since he only has them for the first part of the movie. After he uses them to look down at the compound, he never wears them again.

I also have an MFP Max costume from the first movie that is screen accurate, it's just waiting for an accurate revolver holster, which is being worked on now. Pics of that outfit will be posted when it's complete.

And thanks for the comments everyone!

Well done!
One of the only costumes I have ever made more than once.....say about 6 times.

Wow. For me, twice was enough. I made the first one for Halloween a couple of years ago. Made in two weeks for about two hundred bucks. Not accurate, but recognizable.
This new (and final) one took me almost two years (to find, fabricate or modify all of the various components). And I won't even tell you how much I spent...
For example: I went through modifying four original Australian black Bonds t-shirts until I ended up with one that I thought I had cut and bleached just right to wear underneath the leather jacket. (And I still might tweak the cutting a bit. I think the neck opening needs to be wider by about an inch on one side...)

Wow, sweet! If I had hair, or looked anything like Mel, I'd love to try my hand at one of those. One of the best movies ever, imo.

If looking like Mel is part of the criteria I'm in trouble. As are most of the folks who have attempted this costume.

Cool, thanks for the offer. Fortunately, a costume in 1:6 scale usually isn't subjected to the same degree of scrutiny as the real thing. Regarding the binoculars, I have a couple pairs of that look close enough, and as you mentioned, they could easily be replaced with the Gyro Captain's spyglass or omitted altogether, depending on which part of the film I want the figure to represent. Contacting some military collectors or others who are knowledgeable about binoculars sounds like a good idea and might just solve the mystery once and for all. Ya never know.

So I was looking up binoculars for this costume and I found this description that is from a post 8 years ago. After reading this I went to a local Value Village and they had one set of binoculars in a cabinet. Is it just me or are these REALLY weirdly close? Brass tube in the middle, silver on the outside, already weathered, missing the cap on the right lens . . . it's just bizarre! If anyone's interested, these ones are Japanese. I can give more details if anyone wants to try and track down a similar pair.

Thanks for the resources everyone. I've just started my costume, so I'm sure I'll be back a LOT!
