my lifesize Chewbacca Stand ups/costumes: Update 11-30-10

I am starting a new thread about my 2 lifesize Chewbaccas, I´m working on right now. I want to make one ANH and One ESB Chewie. I started with the Hairwork on the ESB first. This is how far I am to date:

This is how I started:

Bernhard Köhler, one of my best and oldest friends, only 10 cm´s smaller then Peter Mayhew with blue eyes, would be the man who should become my Chewbacca. He also is the man who composed the music for Star Wars-Powerplay Of Forces/Spielball der Mächte.

After taking his measurements for the suit and the carved styrofoam body, the next step for me was to take a facecast where I can sculpt the Chewie mask on:

These photos show the sculpt. I sculpted over Bernhards facecast which I completed with the head all around. The eyes remained free. I prepared a mould that I could use for a silicone skin cast where the hair can be punched in.

Looks damn good.....I am starting a Chewbacca myself very soon.

Cant wait to see it finished one time. Great work Jörg:thumbsup

Thank you Guys:cool
Good Luck Vadermonkey:thumbsup
This is how I continued -with a really simple plaster mould:

This is what I received:

Does this cast allow any mimic....like opening or closing the mouth?

Yes, definitely. He can even do the snarl. I also installed a mechanism that allows the snarl to lift up more on one side or on the other.

After I seperated the underskull into jaw and upper head, I sculpted the teeth , and cast them. Followed by the tongue.

Amazing. Have you ever planed to do a run of the facemask itself?

Thanks!
No, I haven´t thought about that, yet.
My plans are to stop spending too much time into the Star Wars hobby - where I still fail so miserably...

If i see these pics you should spend much more time for SW stuff imo:lol

its a true tragedy that folks like yourself that make Chewie look so accurate cannot provide them to everyone. This is the first Chewie likeness I'd pay real money to attain. Well done Joe.

Dave :)

Hi Dave. Thank you :love
Well it´s not like it won´t be a pleasure for me to share my stuff. It´s only that I never thought about that before. I still do have my all moulds for Chewie and Yoda as well. My problem is that I have to give priority to my official sculpting work, more than my hobby. That´s all. I will think about a run of Chewie later that year.

I have to add what a fantastic work space you have. I dream of that kind of area.

Re: my lifesize Chewbacca Stand ups/costumes

I could cry... I've wanted an accurate looking Chewie mask forever. Please do a run.. please please!!!:cry

Re: my lifesize Chewbacca Stand ups/costumes

Thank you moffman, thank you piecefrog.
I´m very happy with my work area. I have to pay "a little" for 270 squaremeters (there are more modelshop-rooms), but I live from that space either, so that´s okay with me. I was working on a 17 meter Mount Rushmore portrait project in that area. It was tight then, but it also worked.

All right, I will do a run of Chewiemasks sometimes later this year, because I´m too busy right now.
Here are some pics of the carved styrofoam bodys:
