My Lifesize 1:1 Gonk Droid

Since I'm needing a little help with my Ben Kenobi tunic and have some free time, and because I've been inspired by some of the excellent Gonk droid projects out there, I figured "why not?".

I found these 14 gallon Rugged Tote boxes at Lowe's. I love the fact they're blue so I don't need to paint them. They were also reasonably priced, about $8 each.

I also went to the dollar store and bought about $15 in odds and ends.

I was originally going to scratch build the feet, but while walking around Lowe's I saw these gutter drop outlets and thought they'd work great. I also picked up some flexible downspouts for the legs. I'm going to remove the little tabs on both ends of the feet and then close both sides with a piece of styrene. I think by the time I paint them black and add greeblies, they'll look the part.

I built some internal supports for the legs / feet and added a center support to the body.

I started removing the latch handles and cut a few holes. I think it's off to a good start!

Nice start.

I saw Target has some new colored tubs for back to college.

For those that didn't see it, there are a few new Gonk Droids in the SDCC behinds the scenes video for E7.
Includes a nice shot of the feet and one with the top off and the actor inside.

yeah buddy . . . looks great!

Thanks all. Fuzzual, as I mentioned in my Obi-Wan thread, I'm using your Gonk builds as my inspiration. You did an incredible job! Mine won't be nearly as intricate, but I hope it turns out well.

Thank you for saying that, very kind. I am sure yours will turn out great!

Did a little work today, most of these parts aren't permanent yet as I still need to paint them. Just mocking it up and roughing in pieces.

Going to add some LEDs and other greeblies to the front.

I used the bottom half of a dollar store book light as a side detail piece which will also have LEDs. I also used two furniture caps, drilled holes and added cable outlets, epoxied a small bolt into each one and put those on as well.

On the back I used a phone docking station, parts from a calculator, and a cigarette outlet USB port; all from the dollar store.

I added an electrical box and a gang box to the other side and added a screw top lid from a themas I got from the dollar store.

Gotta say this is a pretty simple and fun build, sorry I waited so long to start one! More to come.................

Got the LEDs installed and the legs and a few of the other greeblies painted black. Here's a test fit. I still need to paint several pieces, straighten and secure everything, and start assembling.

Wow-thats one of the best ive seen. Great work :)

Thanks!

I was able to get most of the assembly completed. I'd say I'm about 95% done with this, just have a few finishing touches.

I've got less than $85 in this, pretty happy with it.
