My Journey Through Bond

Watching Thunderball right now. The audio mix is terrible. The dialog is so quiet that I have to jack up the sound then turn it back down every time there is an action scene. The plane just crashed into the water. Nice to see Sean in the opening gun barrel now.

Thunderball is great although a little slow at times. I'll wait until your final thoughts before I post mine.

It seems that some of your audio problems are with the BR mix. I don't recall any of the issues your talking about with either FRWL or TB.

Just finished it. Really liked it. The ending was a bit cheesy with all the sped up stuff. What happened to the poor scientist guy at the end? I was surprised at how it was able to hold my interest even with all the underwater sequences.

Thunderball was one I didn't really like when I was younger but grew to appreciate more and more. It contains my favourite musical cue in the series (when the plane picks them up leading into the end credits, that shrill start to the Bond theme makes the hair on my neck stand up!)

Thunderball (1965) - Sean Connery

Following the success of Goldfinger, Thunderball was the highest grossing film of the classic era and when adjusted for inflation the highest grossing Bond film of all time. The producers threw money at this film spending three times what they did on Goldfinger. The result is a good film but one that is hit and miss. While the pacing of the movie is good and the elements are all there the underwater battle scenes seem slow and not overly interesting. On a side note this film marked the last time that anyone could say that there was never a bad Bond film.

The Good: Largo is delightfully evil and the music is brilliant. The scene at SPECTRE headquarters is great.

The Bad: The underwater fights while impressive lack emotion and fall a bit flat after a while. As my grandmother said "too much underwater stuff for me".

OH! And before it hits midnight HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JAMES BOND!!! :D

50 years old today. Doesn't look a day over 49. ;)

My wife and I are doing the exact same thing! I LOVE this thread!

Dr. No - the biggest letdown for me is relatively minor, and it's how Dr. No dies with such little fanfare - almost treated like any other henchman death.

From Russia With Love - I really like seeing how the Bond elements I took for granted (I was born in '73 so I too saw Moore as Bond first, bummer!) start establishing themselves. Seeing Q, the gadgets start to appear... the quips start getting funnier, and my god, the sexual double-meanings to some of the dialogue - so brilliant!

Goldfinger - Probably the best Bond villain, as he seems to get MORE dangerous as the film progresses, and it heightens the stakes.

Thunderball - Agreed that the underwater scenes start to get a little excessive, but only a little. I really do like to relax in a composed scene.

We just watched You Only Live Twice this evening... so I'll respect the wishes to keep current with ya!

Transfers are STUNNING. These look almost like contemporary films set in the 1960s, not made in the 1960s.

Favorite quip so far: "See you later, irrigator"

Mine so far from last night's You Only Live Twice:

Mr. Osato: You should give up smoking. Cigarettes are very bad for your chest.
Helga Brandt: Mr. Osato believes in healthy chest.
[Bond eyes Helga's breasts]
James Bond: Really?

I laughed with glee, as the wife gave me a look like "seriously?" - which made it even better.

Wait, wait, you consider those spoilers? Come on, have we not seen these films 8 gazillion times by now to know or at least recall these scenes?

No, they're not spoilers at all. The OP requested no talk about movies that he hasn't gotten to in this thread and we were skirting around that. :lol

Just trying to be respectful. In a regular Bond discussion thread there would be no spoiler tags for any of the already released movies.

Oh, I've seen them all a bunch, too. But it's fun to do them linearly. Oh, speaking of, I need to buy Never Say Never Again. Do you know off hand if I should watch it before or after Octopussy? Both came out the same year, right?
