My Journey Through Bond

I like it, but it also has some aspects to it that I find painful, probably more because they remind me of a fairly unpleasant summer I spent when the film came out. Plus, the late-80s aspect of it is somewhat distasteful for me, even though the same thing in Living Daylights is fine. Go figure.

I do think that Timothy Dalton's Bond is one of the closest to the literary version that we've seen.

Fair enough! :lol

The 70's Bond films really suffered from this. They don't look nearly as classy however TSWLM seems to look fine to me. Go figure.

You do realise that the flying car was based on this actual car Galpin News, Videos, Reviews and Gossip - Jalopnik
They were going to use the prototype but it crashed before filming started

Yep, and the boat chase through the Thames in TWINE was based on a real boat and the jetpack in Thunderball was a real working jetpack. Kind of proves my point though, the only reason it's in the movie is because it's something new. They created a scene for it. That makes it kinda dumb.

Yeah, definitely the scenes which exist SOLELY to show off some gizmo or gadget are some of the worst aspects of the Bond films. I mean, yeah, I get product placement, but one thing I really like about the new direction is the decreased emphasis on gadgetry, since it means an increased emphasis on the agent and the team behind them.

(y)thumbsup

Although this thread has gone pretty OT now... Sorry! :lol

No, which is why I said the overall role. Although I'm struggling to think of more than a couple... Give me some examples.

Domino, Tracy Bond, Anya Amasova, Holly Goodhead, Melina Havelock, Kara Milovy, Natalya Simonova, Wai Lin, Vesper, agent fields, Camille and our newest Money Penny.

And of course the little lady with pigtails who stole Jaws' heart.

Used to get close to Largo and then used to find the evidence which nearly gets her killed.

Tracy Bond

Give ya this one. But she was written to be different.

Anya Amasova, Holly Goodhead, Wai Lin

The whole purpose of these characters was that they and Bond would use each other throughout their respective films. All in which Bond eventually gets the upper hand and ends up bedding them.

Melina Havelock

Give ya this one as well.

Kara Milovy

:lol Seriously? Her entire role in the film was to be used by all the men in her life! She's set up as a sniper and then Bond leads her on to believe that he's taking her to her love. Used to get to the bad guy.

Natalya Simonova

When she confronts Bond what does he do? Force himself upon her. She instantly turns into jello. Yes she's the witness and is useful, but she's there for sex appeal.

Another :lol from me! The whole story hinges on the fact that she's being manipulated but a man! Sure, Bond doesn't use her but the whole reason she's in this mess is because she loves a man that is using her.

agent fields

Sent to stop him and then used by Bond to help him. Sorry, doesn't fit the bill.

Used to get an in with the bad guy.

Money Penny

AHEM. "Monnepenny". In this film sure, but she's already starting to pine for Bond.

And of course the little lady with pigtails who stole Jaws' heart.

Not a Bond Girl but sure, I'll give you that one. :lol

Guys can you please hold off on discussing the ones I haven't seen yet? I don't want to go in with any preconceived notions.

I'll make it easy for you. Don't watch anything after Live and Let Die. They started to get too campy for me.

As for product placement, that was even in the books, so you can't really complain about it being in the movies. How many of us have Rolex watches or Walther PPK's because Bond had them?

I don't think it's THAT bad. There's still some good films in the mix, definitely. Specifically, I'm thinking of:

The Spy Who Loved Me
For Your Eyes Only
The Living Daylights
Goldeneye
aspects of Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough
Casino Royale
Skyfall

Okay, maybe not that bad and I've seen them all and even liked most of them when I first saw them. I guess I just didn't like the direction Moore's Bond was going in after the first couple of films. One of the problems for me was when they just started using the titles of the books, but the movies had nothing to do with the books.

I think the closest Bond to the books was Connery, since they were basically making the books into the movies, except for DAF where they just used the character names. He even had the good fortune to meet with Ian Fleming before his death so he was able to get a good grip on who Bond was supposed to be.

I'm gonna spoilerize this so as not to potentially muck anything up, and also to try to keep the "journey" on track. That said...

Yeah, I agree that using the titles with little else just got stupid after a while. Interestingly, many of the things that happened in the later films are things lifted from other books. The "dragged behind a boat" thing in FYEO was out of Live and Let Die. The beaten woman in Licence to Kill was out of Quantum of Solace. The shark thing in that film was also out of Live and Let Die.

But overall, the Moore era is clearly the full embrace of the Movie Bond as opposed to Literary Bond. The Connery era slowly transforms into this, but Moore just goes for it whole-heartedly. I think Dalton's problem was that his films really tried to dial that back and get back to the books at a time when people weren't ready. Brosnan's films suffered more from an uneven balance between the elements, although it had both.
