my Game of Thrones prop documents project WIP *may contain spoilers*

*may contain some spoilers*

Hi everyone, I kept meaning to post my Game of Thrones project I’ve been working on for some time but just haven’t been able to get around to it until now...

I decided to recreate a number of the documents from the past 3 seasons of the show since my Game of Thrones collection is pretty sparse and props are still too few. I thought seeing these pieces in the show was really neat since they actually play a significant role in moving key plot points and events forward... so I had to have them! :D

I based these from several sources such as the screen used piece and behind-the-scenes photos of the original prop. In some cases, I went back to the book or simply used my best judgement and imagination....

I decided to organize the pieces in two thematic sets:
1. the War of the Five Kings set which contains documents relating to the outbreak of the War of the Five Kings.
2. the Prince of Winterfell set, which contains documents relating to the rise and fall of everyone’s favourite Greyjoy...

The handwritten calligraphic quality is much better in person than the pics show. And the colour of the text may look black but it is more of a dark walnut colour. I had these professionally printed as giclees on textured fine art paper so they definitely don’t feel cheap. The paper is nice to work with and has a really great feel to it.

I am still finalizing the final artwork and the weathering, so the pics are just teasers. But I’ll post more pics as I finalize each piece. I’m also still waiting on the rest of my seals to complete each piece.
The weathered Stark letter in the pics below is just a test piece; I’m still finalizing the weathering. The weathering was actually done separately. To maintain consistency and get the weathering right, I scanned the weathering and overlaid it onto the original image. As such, only the front will have the weathering.

So without further ado:

From the War of the Five Kings set:

Robert Baratheon’s Will
As seen in Season 1, Episode 7 “You Win or You Die.”
I based this replica’s wording on the various versions seen in the episode and the titles I based off Ned’s proclamation in the very first episode before he passes judgement. The lettering was done to be consistent with Ned’s handwriting on the parts that could be seen on screen as well as his letter to Stannis.
I’m also working on a 2nd version which includes Ned’s title as ‘Warden of the North’ since this seemed to be omitted from the screen used one(s).
Since the seal was never shown in the show and only referenced by Ser Barristan as “King Robert’s seal, unbroken”, I went back to the book passage. I decided to use the Baratheon stag seen on the banners during the Hand’s Tourney in Episodes 4 &5 as the basis for the seal, which I am still patiently waiting for.
GOT001.jpg 003.JPG 002.JPG

Eddard Stark’s Letter to Stannis Baratheon
Also seen in Season 1, Episode 7 “You Win or You Die” and the travelling exhibit in full, I based the majority of this on the prop in the exhibit with the last few lines and words on the screen used one.
I had a seal made based on the screen used one which, of course, is the Stark direwolf.
GOT002.jpg 004.JPG 019.JPG 020.JPG

Stannis Baratheon’s Declaration
This can barely be seen in Season 2, Episode 1 “The North Remembers” so I had to come up with my own script trying to maintain the general look of the screen used one as well as trying to be both unique and consistent with the Westerosi script of other documents.
I based the wording on what was stated by Stannis and Mathos in the episode, as well as the original passage from ‘A Clash of Kings’ but with some minor alterations to keep consistency with the series’ phrasing of formal titles.

I also plan on doing a version based on the book passage and wording.
Also decided to make a seal for this based on Stannis’ stag and fiery heart sigil.
GOT003.jpg 006.JPG 005.JPG

Maester Aemon’s Warning
As seen in the Season 3 finale, “Mhysa”, I used the behind-the-scenes photo of the prop to complete this piece. Those who have read ahead will, of course, know the importance that Maester’s Aemon warning has on developments down the road...
Although difficult to see, the seal on the screen used prop looked like a crow to me so that’s what I went with for the seal.

Although I haven’t started on it yet, I plan on doing another version based off the book passage.
GOT004.jpg 009.JPG 008.JPG

From the Prince of Winterfell set:

Theon’s (Burned) Letter to Robb Stark
This was seen in Season 2, Episode 3 – “What Is Dead May Never Die” in a great character development moment for Theon. There are two versions of this letter: the screen-used one and the one from the travelling exhibit. There’s not a huge difference save some of the lettering and Theon’s signature. I’m just finishing up the exhibit version.
GOT005.jpg 011.JPG 010.JPG

Ramsay Snow’s Letter to Robb Stark
Although this was never seen on screen and only referenced in Season 3, Episode 2 - “Dark Wings, Dark Words”, I thought it was a neat prop to do so I did.
GOT006.jpg 013.JPG

Ramsay Snow’s Letter to Balon Greyjoy
This fun little piece, of course, was seen and read aloud by Balon Greyjoy in the season 3 finale, “Mhysa”. I made a seal to go with this piece although I’m still finalizing the colour of the wax.

Here are pics of the seals:

I haven’t found the right colour for the Bolton seal yet so I just used gold as a place holder.

Thanks for looking folks. Hope you enjoyed :)

Gorgeous seals! Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to see more.

Re: Game of Thrones historical documents project WIP *spoilers*

Awesome work. King Robert's will is one of the paper props I would love to have. So I'm glad to see it tackled.

I have to ask though, where did you get your sealing coins/stamps made up? They look gorgeous and I'd love to get a Targaryen stamp made up.

Nick, I get my sealing stamps through etsy. Based on my research, it's much cheaper than going through some of the online retailers.
There is usually a wait for production (and shipping), but I've found the wait to be worth it; I've been really satisfied with how they've turned out from my original artwork to the finished piece.
On that note, I should have the remaining stamps in tomorrow (hopefully).

Nice! A progress thread with some rapid progress is always a welcome sight.

Can't wait to see how these all turn out.

...now to go run to Etsy! (How did I not think of that?! :lol)

Re: Game of Thrones historical documents project WIP *spoilers*

Got the rest of my stamps in today which is great. Not so great is the wait for the materials, so don't yet know how the seals will turn out.

In another update, went to my printer today and picked up some of the weathered copies of a few pieces.
I'm generally happy with how they have turned out, the weathering and colour is much more subdued in person than the pics show.

Here is Ramsay Snow's letter to Robb. I'm not yet sure which weathered version I'm going to go with for the final but I'm leaning towards the tanned one.

Ramsay's letter to Balon Greyjoy was the most difficult to get the weathering right. It will still need some further modification as I'm not happy with how the colour turned out; it's a bit more orange-y and pink than I would prefer...

More to follow...

..."implores"...

Here's Maester Aemon's scroll to the lords of Westeros. I am pretty happy with how the weathering turned out on this one...
Just need to fix a typo I just noticed and affix the seal, but this one is pretty much finished.

And here are the two versions of Theon's burned letter to Robb Stark. The weathering is actually much lighter in person; may play around with the weathering further on this one.

Still waiting on the weathered copies of Robert's will, Eddard's letter and Stannis' declaration...
And will post the seals soon.

Here are the seals I got last week and some test pulls I did.
I think I'm going to go with gold for the Robert's seal, the yellow is just too bright for my liking. What are your thoughts?

I say definitely go gold. The yellow makes it look like King Robert melted down a crayon for his seal, the gold look positively kingly though.

Great work as always.

...and I ordered my own Targaryen seal through Etsy thanks to your advice. So thanks for that as well.

-Nick

Thanks Nick. I agree, it definitely does look like a crayon :lol

I look forward to seeing your Targaryen seal. Please do post pics.
After this project, I'd like to get some of the other Houses done as well.

Alright, got back from my printers with the remaining artwork.

Here is an updated version of Ramsay's letter to Balon Greyjoy.
I'm happier with how the colour came out in contrast to the previous one posted above but I still think it needs some tweaking to get it closer to the original prop.

Thoughts and opinions are most welcomed.

Will post the final versions of Robert's will and Eddard's letter shortly.

Here is the final version of Eddard Stark's letter to Stannis.

And here is Robert Baratheon's will, as well as a second version I did with Eddard's title as 'Warden of the North'.
Still working on the book version.

EDIT:
Almost forgot, also picked this up from my printer.
Here's a teaser of my next GoT project after I finish with this one.

Thanks Khal. Making wax seals is actually quite fun :)

I was bored tonight so I quickly drew the following up.

A small update to wind this project down.

Finished the book versions of Aemon's scroll, Stannis' declaration and Robert's will. Just have send these to the printers. Here's what they look like:
stannis008.jpg robert001.jpg aemon.jpg

Tweaked the weathering on the Balon Greyjoy letter (new one is on the left). Also, found a better colour for the Bolton seal; just need to give it a black wash.
IMG_2599.JPG Balon-009.JPG

Also found an alternative gold colour for Robert Baratheon's seal. It has more of a honey and amber hue about it.

Here's my next Game of Thrones project: weathering this map of the Crownlands and the Vale. This map can be seen at the HBO store in New York. Will try and make it look like the original. Wish me luck!

Thanks!
I recreated the map from scratch.
The map isn't actually available, it was only on display in the HBO store.

jedimarkj You've done some amazing work making these props from the show and I'd say that I'm looking forward to seeing more of your document recreations but I can see that you haven't posted in this thread since 2013 so I'll just leave my compliments.

Resurrecting my old thread from the dead!

Recently took on a commission to revisit the letters I did years also and also to do a bunch of letters based from the books and a few from the show. Some of the TV show ones were also revised to match book passages. I used the hand lettering from the shows as inspiration for characters whose writing we never saw on the show.

Here’s a sampling of the work:

The ones below weren’t part of the commission order but since I was feeling inspired, I also recreated some of the screen used letters from the later seasons of the TV show I previously never did. Unlike the other letters, I hand weathered and aged these ones:

Ramsay Bolton ******* letter to Jon Snow

Various:
-the iconic Lyanna Mormont letter to Stannis
-Jon Snow letter to Sansa
-Cersei summons to Jon Snow
-Tyrion’s letter to Jon
-Sansa’s letter to Robb
