My Court of Owls mask

So back in October I took on my first build, I had been reading the New 52 Batman and fell in love with the design of The Court of Owls. I had seen the masks that they were giving away at SDCC and didn't really like the design of it. First I sculpted the base out of clay, that my girlfriend's father had lying around in his basement. This was also my first attempt at sculpting! After a couple of days of messing around with the eyes and trying to get the correct brow definition I was happy enough with it to move on to the next stage. So I obtained some cintra and started applying over the sculpt. I apologize for not taking any pictures of this step. After I finished applying the cintra over the mask I then had to figure out what I could cover the mask in to give it a smooth finish to paint. Not knowing anything about mask making I went to a local theatre store and they suggested Sculpt or Clay. I layered that on the mask trying to get all of the uneven bits smoothed out I tried to sand the few ridges that appeared on the mask after the sculpt or clay dried but it didn't have the effect I was hoping for so I just decided to paint it. After sparying 3 coats of paint on the mask I then attached leather belt straps to the back of it and then it was finished.

Since its been a couple months since I made the mask the paint has started to crack in areas so I think I'm eventually going to try my hand at this mask again, comments and criticisms, improvements are welcome!

Im diggin the Court of Owls mask. Im reading some of the new 52 and that story arc was cool. I dont have that much experience with any of this, but I bet making a mold of the clay sculpt then using rotocast or something of the like would yield a badass mask.

Looks good. I recently did my own court mask as well. I made a thread about it a few days ago, but mine is papercraft, and also a different version from yours (more like the one seen in Batman). Yours looks more like the mask from Talon, which is still pretty cool. You should totally add colored lenses to it.

I have zero experience with sculpting but if I were in your position I would use a preexisting mask such as the one below for a base and general shape and mold the clay over it. However, your 4th picture looks pretty remarkable.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone!

@Blazini: I thought about that shortly after I finished the mask, I'll have to look into it when I try to make the mask again

@Lambzilla: I saw that you're build thread but unfortunately when I looked the links for your pictures wasn't working. I'd be interested in seeing what you put together. While I was building the mask I was thinking about covering the eyes with something but I wasn't sure how to implement it. You're totally right about my mask looking like the ones from Talon ( A comic that I'm currently reading)
