Re: My Conan swords

Wow that is awesome! How much does it cost to make one?

If you wanted to buy equipment and build one yourself.... you'll need :
-Steel: $50-100
-grinding and sanding tools: $300 - 3000
-Metal Cutting saw: $350
-Drill press/ tap and die set: $200 - 300
-Buffer: $350
-Safety Gear: $50
-Sculpting Tools, material, mold making stuff: $200
-Bronze Foundary access: Priceless :lol
- Lots of time!
There's quite a list to get started.

If you're interested in parts/kits/finished stuff... i'll be in the JY soon.

Hi Fuzzual, thanks for the kind words!

Blade making is large hobby/ profession for many people...and you can find a lot searching for Knife Making Supply and Blade Forums... to learn all about steel and shaping it.

Bronze investment casting is a neat subject. There are many art houses that will take a master sculpture and transform it into bronze using the lost wax process (search for Lost Wax bronze casting). That'll give you a good place to start.

The subject is wide and you can't learn it all at once...but focus on a piece at time. Let me know if you have other questions.

LATER!

Thank you very much! My collection tends to be more 'movie' like....not so much historical accurate. I liked the stuff in comic books and kick ass fantasy movies!

What's in your collection?

Re: My Conan swords - wax castings

I just finished the wax castings for the foundary (see attached pics). The foundary will use these for 'lost wax' bronze casting. I'm using a new foundary, can't wait to see the finished bronze!

The pics aren't that good...darn camera is in the shop and I borrowed my 7 year old's. Kinda funny what 7 year old girls take pictures of. Big blocks of green, red, barbies, and hats. I'm looking for my sword pics to download and all I can find is blurry, costumed acrobats. :lol

Re: My Conan swords - blade work

I just decided to build a new blade for this sword. I found a local shop to help me make the Father's Sword blade as perfect as possible. I've been obsessing over these blades for 10 years, so it's cool as hell to be working with a shop that can cut every detail for me.

Attached is the drawing I made. I'm hoping to have my finished blade in a few weeks. I'll keep you posted.

BTW, I dropped off the wax casts at the foundary yesterday, they have a 3 week lead time.

Re: My Conan swords

Thanks Stephen210, it means a lot!

I was just reviewing the Gladiator Armor thread and your name was mentioned as a sword maker. What kind of works have you done? Anything movie related?

Re: My Conan swords

I just re-wrapped my first father's sword I ever made....with the generous help of rfp member Nexus6!! He figured it out and sent me a movie of it... MUCH THANKS TO NEXUS6!! A Great Guy!
