My Colonial Movers saga... FINISHED!!!

13 years ago I saw Jim Crevelings Battlestar and Movers replicas in Florida. Always being a fan of the ragtag fleet, I though "That movers ship look easy, I should make one too". Talking to Jim and then Charles Adams, Mark Dickson, plus many others on the way I found that while Jim's mode was superb, it was far from correct. So I started to buy kits, ask questions, and look way to close at the DVD. Slowly more and more pieces came together. Then in 2003 while working on the new show I received a picture from Greg Jein that really helped fill in some gaps (especially the Arado nose). Then for many many years it sat in a box while I traveled for work. Since then the B&W Pappas picture has surfaced and a few new pieces have been found. Now I'm finally going to complete my replicas 12years journey :)

What started it all...

Last weekend I dug out the pieces, the white plastic on many pieces have turn a noticeable yellow. Then finally sorted out the containers and attached them with magnets. They had been done once, but wrongly.

I know all the bits I'm missing and should have them on the way in a week or two. One place I'm not going to fix/correct is the (now known) gap in the engines section. Mine has been glued together for 12 years and if the join is that good, I'm not messing with it. Plus to be honest, it looks better without the gap.

Far from correct is right:facepalm Back then I had to guess at everything. Hell, I even scratch built all the containers!

Glad to see you finally getting on with with this one Lee. It's a fun n easy build, especially now with so much more data available.
I dig your magnet/container attachment method and I must admit your Arado cockpit looks somewhat better than my toothpaste cap :lol

I still can't believe you scratched those containers! They are amazingly accurate!
It would be a fun easy build these days, but this one wasn't so easy. Still fun though.
Painting the containers this weekend, then the main body soon.

One of the coolest ships in the fleet.
Great work as always Lee.

Re: The Colonial Movers saga...

Hey all I need some help with 'one last part'
It's a small flat panel on the side of the red container and it was mostly ignored for years (I thought it was a decal) These are modified/straightened from the best pics I have of the area. Adjusted and scaled to get the best look. It could be two pieces, one bit on the left painted the same color as the Post Van Trailer and then the yellow piece added after, but I really don't know. ANYONE?

Re: The Colonial Movers saga...PART HELP NEEDED

Here's an update, things are moving along now, thanks to JAWS and Wombat! I've removed some parts I had used substitues for, finished the containers and detailed the center section finally! Last time I had any real progress was in 2004! I have a few new parts on the way from Shadowknight and updated custom decals from JT Graphics, so in a few weeks the final pieces will be here.

There's also a couple of surprises I'm working on :)

Finally have a casting from the Aurora M8, it's an important part as it's extremely visible. Here's what I scratched based on DVD frame grabs. Don't think I did too bad.

Something strange has happened to both my 'core' tubes. They have cracked in strange ways. Neither has been drilled, the magnets are glued on. Both are about 6 years old and I glued the magnets on over a month ago. Then a couple of days ago when I started work on them again one started to do this. Then the other. It's very strange why. Hopefully they stop and don't fall apart, but you can see some little cracks just starting in the middle of nowhere.

Center section is done!

And the containers have some colour (color in the US) The red might be too bright, but there's ALOT of weathering to go on them.

I'm wondering if this cracking of the tube would be the invisible forces of polarity from the magnets being so close to each other causing havoc in the tube. Never come across this before, seems very odd. Are the magnets 'industrial grade' by any chance Lee?.

Re: My Colonial Movers saga...

Hey Stu,
I'm thinking that too, they are strong magnets. Not sure if they are industrial though. I've added some additional strengthening inside between the plexi tube and the metal core. I'm wondering it it's because I'd taken this tube off and it not longer had the steel tube down the middle and now the magents were pulling directly on each other. Let's see!

Re: My Colonial Movers saga...

Lee, Looks OUTSTANDING so far!! Great job!! The M8 parts look really nice. Yeah, when you start slapping down the weathering and some misting, the colors will tone down.

Are you going to make the forward green container the two tone?
