My builds: Iron Man MK IV finished - Foam Morphin Power Ranger helmets in progress

Hi all, I'm fairly new here and discovered Pepakura in August while looking for a way to make a shredder helmet 1990's cartoon Shredder helmet (never did find one).
Since then I think I've become a little addicted! I'm fortunate enough to be self employed, I run a small pet shop and in my quiet time for the last 2 months I've been pepping.
I started my MKIV build midway through August using JFS foam unfolds ater watching many videos and reading many build threads, I estimate it took me around 175 hours total, here are the pics:

First part I built was the chest, abs, then back, then shoulders, I replaced the chest eventually as, as I got used to pepping with foam I realised it was a pretty rubbish chest and the foam I used was no good.

This is when I decied a new chest was needed, I also puchased a custom made Arc Reactor on eBay for £15.

I then spent a full Sunday painting with my brother.

I've since bought a second skin red suit and red strapping to build a garter belt type support for the legs, when I eventually do this and suit up for the parties I'm attending over Halloween I'll post some pics.

So.... because I now had a pretty awesome Halloween costume my wife wanted something a group of us had discussed going as Power Rangers to some events next year so we decided we would make her a Pink Ranger costume.

I found some pep files made by dungbeetle and EyeofSauron and attempted to convert the pink to foam and built it out of some left over 5mm foam I had, it came out pretty poor:

So I posted in JFs thread and he kindly converted the Pink and Green helmets for me so I built the Pink (I have also started on the Green a little) this one came out much better:

The red and black lines at the joints are pen, not gaps.

For a Visor I had some left over strips of flexible plastic, the kind used in cold stores these are perfect for visors, they are clear and super flexible like rubber, I'm going to cover these with car black out window film.

So now we needed some boots and a suit, I ordered the Rubies 20th anniversary pink ranger suit, and for the money its pretty nice, and it has a nice morpher on the belt:

For the boots I ordered some cheap white leather boots of Amazon and have glues pink foam diamonds to them using foam I had left over from my Iron Man finger armour:

So now we needed a Power bow! This isn't accurate but it will do, I may make it again at a later date and include the curves to make it more accurate. To build this I found a template on google and printed it off (my wife is short so I made the bow to scale for here).

I cut all these out and then cut a strip in the middle of the middle piece to glue metal supports into to stop the foam from bending.

I then added more of the left over thin foam to the edges to cover the joints:

And that is where I am up to so far with the Pink Ranger build, the helmet should be finished with sealing and ready for painting on Friday/Saturday.

I'll update when I make more progress on the painting.

But... it's blue !?

Re: My builds: Iron Man MK IV almost finished - Pink Power Ranger in progress (pic he

Hey can I have a copy of the foam unfolds please. I have always wanted to do a power ranger helmet. Since I'm a guy, could I get a copy of the green? If not or if you paid I understand.

But... it's blue !?

All my builds are blue JF, its the only foam I can buy for cheap lol, i'll get it looking nice and glossy and green once I've given it about 6 coats of PVA.

Parkplace, the foam PDO files are in JFcustoms speed building thread, they're in one of the last few pages.

Re: My builds: Iron Man MK IV finished - Foam Power Ranger Helmets in progress

Today I've started painting the Pink helmet, gave the bow its last coat of PVA so that can be painted shortly, gave the Green helmet a couple more coats and started building the White ranger helmet....

I'm pretty pleased with how this one has come out.

Tomorrow I will mask off the mouth are to be painted silver and then it's finished:) it needs touching up in a few places where the pink leaked under the tape but I will do that when I do the same touch ups to my MKIV suit.

For the white ranger helmet I have built the ikkakuro helmet base v2 and then used the white ranger pep file for the raised parts only, I will cut these out in thin craft foam once I've finished modifying them to fit on the helm.

Finished the pink helmet and also a quick holster for the blade blaster, that's the wifes costume pretty much finished just the bow to paint.

Re: My builds: Iron Man MK IV finished - Foam Morphin Power Ranger helmets in progres

Finished the majority of the white ranger helmet build today, I will be building the PR helmets as JF unfolds them but in the mean time I'm going to build a second Iron Man suit, and record the process in full in this thread.

Second build of Foam Camping/Yoga Mat Iron Man Mark IV suit

So I've stared on my second build of a Mark IV suit, yesterday I built the Chest plate:

Today I built the back:

m5yrMAU.jpg

I also drew and cut out the shoulder plates today ready for glueing tomorrow.

This one is already looking much cleaner than my first build, I am hoping I will learn from the mistake of my first suit and that this one will be much better. I am reusing the templates I used last time which is saving me a lot of time as I don't have to print and cut out the paper this time.

Re: My builds: Iron Man MK IV finished - Foam Morphin Power Ranger helmets in progres

So since my last update I've put together the shoulders, and then cut and glued the Abs, neck seal and helmet. I have also added the clips to the back, chest and shoulder as well as velcro in places for holding the suit together. I'm very pleased with how much cleaner this build is turning out compared to my first one, I will likely seal and paint this helmet before Halloween to use with my suit, I decided to add some small details such as the rivets to this helmet and also adding cuts/lines to places to make it a little more accurate.

I feel I'm making pretty quick progress for 4 days, I've spent roughly around 6hrs per day during these 4 days (and today isn't finished yet so this is around 24hrs of progress.

I want to display my Mark 4 on a Mannequin after I've worn it a few times over Halloween but if it gets to wrinkled/creased I'll display this one, if however my original suit is ok I may ebay this one to fund buying more materials and some better equipment etc, I'm really enjoying foam building right now and if this is a hobby I want to carry on with I'll have to occasionally build something to sell so I can pay for my foam, glue, paints and blades.

My next big build is going to be a Foam bodied R2D2 with a fibreglass dome and then possibly the C3PO files JF has just finished unfolding to go with the R2D2 I will be building the rest of the Ranger helmets as JF unfolds them along side any big builds as I want all the Ranger helmets for myself and some friends for next year.

vrayas there is tons of information on google, youtube and in tutorial threads here on The RPF forums, do a bit of searching, reading and video watching, thats what I did.

The things I use/what you need are:

1) PDO files of what you wish to build and the software to view these files, tamasoftware's Pepakura viewer or designer programmes (Viewer is free, Designer you pay for but you'll need designer to adjust the scale of the Pepakura files.

2) a printer to print off the files

3) scissors to cut out the files

4) Foam (I use 8mm camping/yoga mats) and marker pens to draw the templates onto the foam.

5) Sharp scissors or a knife such as an Xacto (I actually use a scalpel knife with no10 scalpel blades) It is much cleaner, quicker and easier to cut with a sharp knife.

6) A hot Glue gun and glue sticks to glue the foam together.

7) PVA glue to seal the foam for painting (I use do 3 watered down coats and then 2 pure PVA coats).

Re: My builds: Iron Man MK IV finished - Foam Morphin Power Ranger helmets in progres

Finished the arms and almost finished the Cod piece, not taken any pics though will update fully tomorrow.
I took a bit of a break from the IM build yesterday though to work a little on another project I have going on:

Re: My builds: Iron Man MK IV finished - Foam Morphin Power Ranger helmets in progres

Wore my original Mark IV suit out tonight and won a Contest, suit is pretty worse for wear after one outing though, going to have to make some repairs to it before a party I'm going to on Saturday and don't think I'll be wearing it on Thursday as it's just not practical.

Re: My builds: Iron Man MK IV finished - Foam Morphin Power Ranger helmets in progres

I made some adjustments to the suit for last night, shortened the legs a little, attached the boots to a pair of boots and it was much more comfortable to wear, had a pretty awesome night lost count of how many photos I had to pose for though haha.
Had a few repairs to make tonight for tomorrow's party, my left leg clip came off and my left shoulder came off so have had to reglue and reinforce those and have also painted all the parts were the red has rubbed off silver now so its a battle damaged suit.
