Original Post:

Well ever since I saw Guardians of the Galaxy, you better believe I wanted to do a Star-Lord build. I loved the movie, loved the character, and I can play a reasonable facsimile of him without having to shave, or dye my hair/beard, which is a big win in my books.

I've been collecting bits and pieces for almost a year, but with Halloween coming, I've decided to kick it into high gear, and do a build-log thread as well.

Having seen some of the other threads here, I can assure you I have nowhere near the level of skill that most of the other builders here have, so don't expect miracles, and please be gentle.

I'm also going to lead by saying that I tend to like to balance cost, durability, and accuracy, rather than taking the John Hammond 'Spare no Expense' mentality. I wish I had the budget for that, but since I don't, I take the MacGyver route instead.

I also tend to balance buy vs. build; I like to scavenge ready made, or almost ready made components in 60-70% of cases, then do small alterations, and small builds to round out the whole effect.

Without further ado; Here's what I have at present
(I'll be posting better photos when doing closeup build work, and when showing off the final results):

1: Long-coat

PhuSYWD.jpg

This was bought from an ebay seller about nine months ago. The fit is good (though the sleeves can be a bit tight if you're wearing anything bulky underneath).
The texture isn't as weathered as I'd consider to be ideal, but the color is spot on, and its a durable flexible synthetic leather material that I like. The pauldron is a bit boxy, so I'm debating whether or not I have time/budget to make a better replica. Attaching a new one would be easy, since the current one attaches via velcro.

I intend to make the rank baubles/little metal devices seen on the brown segmented part of the lower left side using balsa wood, and possibly magnets for attachment. Failing that, fabric tape.

2: Blasters (Unpainted as-yet)

j5La7Vm.jpg

I was lucky enough to get these back when each was about $10 on Amazon, so I got the brace of them for 20, and free shipping to boot. I intend to paint them, as others have, but I have no plans to modify the structure for added accuracy as some do. I'd like to preserve the nerf functionality, because it's a lot of fun (and my cat goes nuts for chasing the darts).

3: Shirt

WGVfNwB.jpg

I already owned this. In fact, I've had it almost three years. My cousin passed it on to me in a box of spare clothes. Free is fun!

4: Misc Items (Gloves, Headphones, Boot Rocket Controls)

ZChdGPZ.jpg

Staar Lord Maan discovered the gloves I eventually settled on in this thread (http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=222616) I found some at my local Lowe's. I plan minimal alterations to them, mainly to cover up the brand logos.

I discovered the carabiner lights while at Lowe's; They were $1.50 a pop, and are almost exactly the right shape and size to be the boot rocket controls. I plan to use either modelling clay, or a cut & painted balsa wood insert to fill in the center of the carabiner. I may then make some subtle alterations to the light's faceplate to remove the brand logo, and give it a color closer to the one in the movie.

The headphones were super-cheap knockoffs found on Amazon. They work fine for the price.

The Plan:

Components I am missing currently:

Belt - In the mail, possibly arriving today. I purchased a basic replica from Amazon.

Pants - I plan a shopping trip sometime in the next couple of weeks to get these from a local store.

Boots & Spats - I intend to use my existing durable workboots as footwear. The spats will have to be made, or modified from something bought locally.

Rockets - I have purchased some cheap plumbing components that account for the rocket tubes themselves, still working on the body parts, and mounting system. It's tough to find something to start with that's shaped like the center piece of the rockets.

Bag - I'll likely do a modification on something store-bought.

Vambrace & Pauldron - I may or may not do a better pauldron and get a vambrace/arm guard, depending on what materials or stand-ins I can find. I'll be searching some local Halloween shops first, then looking into eva foam.

Blaster painting, and Holstering - The painting should be relatively easy; That's a known quantity with many great guides and logs. The holster system will be the tricky bit. Any suggestions for something that'd work well & not break the bank would be most welcome.

Misc Props - Any miscellaneous props like the orb, or map device, or plasma ball, would only be something I'd attempt if I found a cheap object while shopping to work as a good modifiable base.

And finally, the big issue:

Walkman - I still haven't decided what to do about this. I am hoping against all hope to find one for less than an arm and a leg at a yardsale, or something similar, but I have no delusions. That's a highly unlikely eventuality. I'm still trying to decide what the next best alternative is. I don't like a lot of the mass produced acrylic/3D printed replicas, they definitely don't feel substantial enough.

I am aware there were TPS-L2 knockoffs, and successors, that go for much less, and could theoretically be painted. That's probably my favorite course of action currently.

I do have a couple of blank black cassette tapes, and a tape deck with a line-in jack, so transferring my copy of the soundtrack to tape will be easy, as will making a label.

Currently, I do not plan to do the helmet. I'm stoked that I have finally found a Marvel character I really like, whom I can cosplay without shaving/dyeing my hair/beard, so I don't want to cover up my face. It can also hot-snap pretty painfully around here this time of year, so the breathing situation would get really unpleasant really fast if the weather didn't co-operate.

Re: My Basic Star-Lord Haloween Build

In today's news, I did some work on the rocket controls:

7rrpZEI.jpg
(Duct Tape: The most powerful and versatile in the sacred trinity of engineering substances (together with WD-40 and Gorilla Glue))

h4cHgkE.jpg

Still working out what I'm going to do to the light's faceplate. Ideally, I'll find some clear yellow material to filter the color, then cut out a silver cover that leaves just a small open ring of light around the button, like what was seen in the movie.

I'll figure out the mounting system once I have my pants, since I want to do something comfortable, yet sturdy. I'll either put pins (of the straight kind with the push in end-cap), or safety pins, most likely, depending on whether or not the former option would irritate my leg in the final build.

The bigger news of the day is that the belt arrived:

Fu2LD4x.jpg

For $30 it's a workable replica. While the synthetic substance of the belt isn't as wow-factor as the real leather in some of (for example) the Etsy sellers' belts, it is surprisingly good looking and durable nonetheless. Well worth what was spent, given market values for both better and shoddier options.

I am too thin to properly fasten the smallest belt size offered (Medium), so I have to roll my own fastening solution with (of all things) a binder clip, but that hides pretty well around near the small of my back, and works well for my purposes. No biggie, I've improvised through much much worse.

Finally, there is a bag being sold on Amazon now, and currently on sale with free shipping, so I splurged and nabbed that, since nothing I find at WallyWorld (or thirft shops) is ever going to compare to something intended to be a replica. Needed modification will be minimal with this solution, and the cost will end up being the same in the long run, when you factor in what it might have cost to modify something off-a-shelf.

I took the risk of ordering standard shipping on the bag (expedited was half again as expensive as the bag itself) but considering the belt came from the same seller, and it arrived two weeks earlier than the earliest projected arrival date, I think I'm on solid footing there.

Re: My Basic Star-Lord Haloween Build

Nice build.

Was wondering. What bag did you get from amazon?

This one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015WG33H8

It looks pretty good in the pictures, and the belt from the same seller was decent.
I'll certainly post my own pics & opinions (and any modifications I end up making) once the bag arrives.

Fingers crossed that it gets here in time for Spooky Night!

I'm out of town next week, but I expect I'll be able to do some shopping/scavenger hunting at my destination for misc things and materials.
Then I'll have the whole week run-up to the 31st to finish things out.

I'm debating taking the blasters and paint materials with me on my trip and doing that work there.

Interesting. I didn't know the factories had gotten that far along with the bag.

Interesting. I didn't know the factories had gotten that far along with the bag.

I was surprised too. It actually only appeared a few days ago, and that only a bit after the belt.

I'm, naturally, not expecting anything of the quality that the more skilled crafstpersons here can accomplish, but I am hoping for something that falls in a medium quality range, that I can then tinker with further as my time and ambition permit.

And it'll theoretically make a great tote for my tablet to boot.

Well, it's definitely the best of the factory produced bags I've seen. A good base to work on.

Re: My Basic Star-Lord Haloween Build

So the bag came while I was away for the week:

kujyCB5.jpg

It is by the same company my belt came from, and I'd actually characterize the bag as a better replica, in terms of accuracy-per-dollar (if there is such a thing) than the belt was.
The materials and construction feel more solid and real, and screen-accurate, and you'd have to hold it up beside the real thing, or one of the hand-made projects from RPF, to really spot any of its failings.

I put more pictures in the Sling Bag thread itself, so the interested could go over the pluses and minuses with a fine toothed comb.

The biggest thing I could see it needing is some weathering. And some nifty stuff to go inside naturally.

I picked myself up a pair of pants while I was gone

YmzSIo8.jpg

I'm not quite sure they fit the bill (cheap yes, accurate... maybe not enough to balance things out), but I'm going ahead with them for Halloween, and can replace them with more accurate (and expensive) motorcycle pants in the future (say, before my area's big conventions).

I think I'll bite the bullet and start my blaster paint job Monday (presuming I can find the paints I need, which is a fairly safe assumption) and maybe even work on the boot rockets while the blasters are drying between coats. Hopefully this week will be full of updates leading up to Halloween.

Re: My Basic Star-Lord Haloween Build

I couldn't find any suitably interesting pants either. I ended up going the exact opposite direction and picking up the plainest pants I could, no details. Ended up with some "jogger" style pants. It actually looks better than I thought it would. Kind of like the comic or cartoon version in overall appearance.

I can see that being the best route shy of getting more expensive pants. Sometimes simple and understated is the best way to rock it.

Today was good for progress, but not quite as good as I'd hoped.

I went out and got the blaster painting materials, but spent more time than I intended helping a friend with her costume shopping, and ended up being too late to paint the blasters after taking the time to disassemble them.

The disassembly went well enough (all screws off-screen in containers with locked lids, labeled and sorted):

ebWGdHp.jpg JAa7v43.jpg WPqAeyg.jpg

Though as you can see, I'm making the risky bid to paint the triggers in-place, as opposed to disassembling the entire stock.

Wish me luck.

Plan is to do what many here have done so successfully already:
  1. Sand all orange surfaces and exposed gray surfaces
  2. Coat two or three times with plastic-binding matte black Krylon paint+primer hybrid
  3. Once dried, take appropriate parts that need silver, tape off any regions that need to remain black, then use Rub 'n Buff Silver Leaf, applied via an old sock, one to three coats depending on results.
  4. Once all dried, apply clear coat over top
  5. Once that's fully dry, re-assemble

Tomorrow I need to get some sandpaper (forgot that I'm lacking in that department at home) and try to find a way to get the blasters actually painted without exposing them to rain, or harming my bird; It's supposed to rain here near-constantly Tuesday and Wednesday. And my carport is so full of junk even the Collector would be ashamed. And with a bird in the house, inside is not an option for the painting (maybe for the drying).

I also nabbed some canvas patches while I was out, and did a little work on my gloves: Not screen accurate precisely, but close enough. And no more logos (that's the big thing).

QXpyDdv.jpg

On deck for tomorrow:

  • Making the rank baubles/metallic greebly bits for the lower part of the coat (I have all the materials now)
  • Making and applying Awesome Mix labels (I don't think I'll bother to record to the tapes unless one of my very tenuous lines on a real Walkman pans out miraculously)
  • Finishing the boot rocket controls
  • Painting the blasters, if possible

On deck for Wednesday:
  • Reassemble the blasters later in the evening (if I was able to paint them in the first place).
  • Assemble and paint boot rockets, if possible
  • Figure out a holstering system for the blasters

Thursdays are packed for me due to other reasons (which will give the blasters further time to sit un-handled and dry), leaving Friday to do any last minute shopping, or work on items that fell through the cracks.

I think a better pauldron, a vambrace, spats, and any other misc props will have to wait. I hit up quite a few clothing and Halloween stores in my area, and couldn't find anything even remotely usable for these, even as a base. So I expect I'll need to build those from scratch.

I certainly intend to keep enhancing the build over time (I'd like to have a 'phase-II' version done before an area con in January with the spats, new pauldron, and vambrace at very least); I just don't have the time to do everything I can envision for the long run right now in the short term, and I'd prefer to spend the money over a longer period of time, rather than in a giant scary clump.

Re: My Basic Star-Lord Haloween Build

Yep, sequel is 2017 so should be plenty of time to get a piece here a piece there. What I have right now was hastily assembled for a con last year, so I have to upgrade many things.

Re: My Basic Star-Lord Haloween Build

Yep, sequel is 2017 so should be plenty of time to get a piece here a piece there. What I have right now was hastily assembled for a con last year, so I have to upgrade many things.

In a perfect world, my by-2017-premier shopping list is:
  • Get one of the much nicer belts, and bags, from one of the sources here on RPF
  • Make my own pauldron/arm guard, and spats
  • Bite the bullet and spring for a working Walkman, and better pants (and these are really the highest priority items)

That's probably 1.5x again what I've already spent on things so far, but in the long view it isn't such a steep cost considering the great quality to be had, and considering that I'm still very much a kid-at-heart and I wear costumes far too much in the course of every day life.

I can realistically see myself assembling that list bit by bit over the next two years.

Today's progress was only marginal, since it was indeed pouring like crazy here. I have a buffer zone for the blasters though; tomorrow may let up, and Thur/Fri are supposed to be gorgeous here, so absolute worst case I can paint all Friday and re-assemble Saturday morning.

In lieu of blaster work, I went ahead and made my mixtapes:

L2MU0AJ.jpg

Yeah, they're a little mismatched for tape type (they were the only black/grayish ones in my collection, which I was theoretically willing to tape-over), and no I haven't recorded to them yet (nothing to play them on besides my ancient tape deck). But they work as basic props. Maybe I'll pick up some of the actual proper tapes one of these days if I lay hand to a real working Walkman.

Interesting note: I purposefully printed blank labels, then wrote the words on (A-Side only), to get that real pen-ink-on-paper look that printers can't seem to reproduce.

When I do record to tapes, this is my planned track list:

Awesome Mix Vol. 1 Tracks:
--------------------------
1: Come and Get Your Love – Redbone
2: Go All the Way – Raspberries
3: Hooked on a Feeling – Blue Swede
4: The Pina Colada Song – Rupert Holmes
5: Moonage Daydream - David Bowie
6: Fooled Around and Fell in Love – Elvin Bishop
7: Cherry Bomb – The Runaways
8: Spirit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum
9: O-O-H Child – Five Stairsteps
10: I'm Not in Love - 10cc

Awesome Mix Vol. 2 Tracks:
--------------------------
1: Ain't no Mountain High Enough - Marvin Gyae/Tammi Terrel
2: I Want You Back - Jackson 5
3: Superstition - Stevie Wonder
4: Private Eyes - Hall & Oates
5: I wanna Dance With Somebody -Whitney Houston
6: Power of Love - Huey Lewis & The News
7: Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen
8: Bad - Michael Jackson
9: You Make My Dreams Come True - Hall & Oates
10: Footloose - Kenny Loggins

I assembled Vol 2 based on some of my favorites from the appropriate time period, and I grouped the film's final two songs into Vol 2 because that's where they technically were. Personally, I can envision Star-Lord dancing to any of these. And Footloose was mentioned in the movie, so it's practically a mandatory inclusion.

I'll worry about re-doing Vol 2 after the sequel.:p

Re: My Basic Star-Lord Haloween Build

It begiiiiiiiiiiiiiiins!

WF9bPF2.jpg

WUn8dVY.jpg

The painting of the blasters has really become the centerpiece of this phase of the project in terms of effort/complexity, and in terms of hoped-for result.

Together with the jacket I'd think of them as the most indispensable part of the get-up at this point.

Sanding went well, and then I began applying base coats of Krylon matte black primer+paint hybrid. I'm drying the second of those coats now, and I think it will be the last of the base-coating.

If so, I'll move on to clear-coat the blaster's central structure pieces, since all they needed was a base coat of black. Once that's setting, I'll tape-off the parts of the remaining pieces that are staying black, and apply Rub 'N Buff to the silver bits until satisfied with the result.

That will set for a few hours, then I'll clear-coat the remaining bits before bed so the whole thing will be ready tomorrow morning for assembly, and further drying through the day, before use in the evening.

Presuming that all goes well, the final tally of un-finished/outstandng items from the first post will be:

  • Baster Paint - Check
  • Belt - Check (Bought, may replace with better replica in next phase)
  • Pants - Check (Ditto belt)
  • Boots & Spats - Negative (I have serviceable boots, but next phase may see me making a proper replica of the screen-accurate boots)
  • Rockets - WiP (I have some materials but couldn't muster the rest of them before the 31st. Will finish for next phase. Controls are essentially done though.)
  • Bag - Check (Bought, may replace with better replica in next phase)
  • Vambrace & Pauldron - Negative (next phase may see me making a proper replica of the screen-accurate pieces)
  • Misc. Props - Check (Mixtapes made, serviceable headphones found, gloves finished)
  • Walkman - Negative (may spring for the real thing, or track down a line on one for cheap, before next phase)

That leaves only one serious outstanding issue for the 31st: I have no way to holster the blasters devised as of yet.
I've got my thinking cap on, and we'll see where that takes me...

Re: My Basic Star-Lord Haloween Build

So the blasters turned out just about perfect!

My only item remaining before tonight is to figure out a holstering system, but I think I've got a good temporary solution covered. I suppose we'll see soon enough...

Gotta say: Rub 'N Buff is basically magic. Especially paired with the old sock application trick, and a matte black base-coat. The whole worn brushed-metallic effect is really spectacular, considering it's paint on plastic.

One of these days I'm gonna splurge, finish this costume out properly, and perhaps even dye my hair/beard to a more correct strawberry blond, then head to a convention.
It'd be my first, and I think that with a little more time, effort (and cash), I can get this into a top-notch state.
