My $10.00 Indy Fedora

Here are some pics of my almost finished $10.00 Burlington Coat Factory Indy Fedora. The hat band is from Todd's Costumes. I consider this closer to the Raider hat.

Before the hat band and right after I cut down the brim:

My next step is to cut back the sides a little more and shave down the felt to give a more smooth look. Used to do this to our beret's when I was in the Army.

Darnit, I went to my local BCF but couldn't find anything "fedoric" in stock... they did have the large wool felt hat with leather band, which is actually more of an Australian cattleman's hat. But I bought one anyway because I was so pissed off that they didn't have the right one. :lol

Actually, that's what you want. The hat in the pics above was an Australian style hat. It's crown is higher than a normal fedora. The hat above had a leather band.

You just have to modify it by trimming back the brim by following the tutorial on Indygear.

Major taper there. A reblock would drastically improve the Raiders look as well... But for $10, doesn't look bad...

Oh really? I did notice that the big round indent on top of mine looked rather like yours. So you trimmed off the rolled and stitched edge of the brim, eh?

I thought the proper Indy hat had a sort of football-shaped dent across the top (front to back). Well I guess hats can be re-dented.

Mine's a black hat tho. So I guess the best I can hope for is to be Toht. :lol

Yep, take a regular razor and just start shaving it.

Yes.

According to Indygear's tutorial, the front brim should be 2 7/8 from the crown. I found mine measured exactly that right where the stitched edge started. I simply cut along the stitching.

Yes, I used a pair of scissors my wife had in her sewing box. The felt was a little more difficult to cut than I thought. I was getting some straight edges, so I slowed down a bit. I still had to go back and trim.

i will have to check the local BCF here and see if they have that hat.

although it would end up being my everyday hat to wear, since i already have a red oval satin lined fedora from england.

For a "close enough" fedora, that's pretty good. And for $10, that's REALLY good!

Not to step on yer thread DH, but I just wanted to chime in as to the potential of those "cheap" BCF fedoras. There was a guy screename Mac over at COW who reblocked this BCF:

and with some craft store ribbon...turned it into this:

Pretty amazing stuff can be done with those hats.

That one's fur felt, too... the earlier-mentioned BCF hat is wool felt. Less spiffy.

I took the plunge and trimmed off the rolled brim on mine. Neat! Now all have to do is find the proper brown hat (mine's black)...
