MUNSON WINS!!!!!!!

Not sure how this dome business turned out to be such a nightmare, but after a LOT of work, a LOT of mistakes, and a million steps backwards, I've finally put the finishing touches on R2's dome.

Whew.

it's a glorious day down here at ROCS, and I'm happy to see him really taking shape now.

As usual, fully gories can be found on my blog, along with a few more pictures.

Even worse, I've officially launched my NEXT blog, which is going to ramp up full speed at the end of the month.

ehhh....I've seen better.....LOL!

Looks great man. Nice to see another droid in the family!

That's CRAP!!! No R2 would be caught dead with a dome like that!! It's not Scottish!!

Looks great!!(y)thumbsup

Looks phalic to me, Matt... Might want to put the arms on it!
J/K Looks really nice. Really shiny.:thumbsup :thumbsup Cant wait to see it finished.

I don't know... it's awfully shiny.:lol

Great job - I've had fun tracking your progress. Glad to know I'm not the only who doesn't get everything right the first time.

:thumbsup

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I'm really hoping to have him finished (or at least, presentable and functional) by the end of the month for R2LA V.

It's been a real struggle getting him to where he is now, but I'm quite happy with the results. Can't wait to get him roaming around the neighborhood.

Looks sweet!

Gonna weather him? I've always been curious about how a naturally weathered R2 would look over the months and years. That is, finish him, clean him up real nice, take lots of photos, and then pretty much never clean him again. You go to a fanfilm shoot and he gets mud or sand on his feet, fine. You go to a convention and a kid smears his grimy mitts on him, fine. He falls off the back of your truck when you're loading him and he gets scuffed, fine...

With all of the good and sometimes not so good weathering jobs done by hand out there, I just have this yen to see what real world use REALLY does to an astromech. (Well, I guess he won't be riding on the back of a starfighter while it zooms through explosions, but anyway!)

MM,

Can't wait to see him a R2LAV. Why not volunteer for a "Demo" so we can dirty him up. :love

Looks F-in Great!! but can he Fetch a Beer :)

Sadly, no. Fortunately I have a girlfriend for that. Though that fact should have come in to question numerous times during the build up!!! :)

Still on the fence about the dirty/clean issue. Savage tells me that the proper way to weather is using acrylics, which come off with water. So it might be worth giving him the once over, just to see if he looks good. If I don't like it, I can just sponge him clean.

At an absolute minimum, I'll give him a light coat and then wipe him down, just to get that "dirty under the fingernails" look. I personally think he looks charming all clean and nice. But it may not be realistic to keep him that way. Seems like EVERY time I move him, something gets dinged up. NO wonder R2 looks so trashed in the movies!!!

Matt,
Well done! I have been following your build-up closely and have been impressed with the progress you have made and the hurdles you have overcome. I have been gathering parts for my aluminum R2 for awhile (about 85%) and I will be revisiting your blog heavily when my building begins. Thanks for taking the time to chronicle your project! :thumbsup

BTW, I am also eagerly awaiting you 3PO build!

Doug
