Muffit - Daggit of BSG

I've heard tales of multiple suits and I'vebeen assured by others that there was only ever one suit.

I have no idea if the suit in question is authentic, however in the 1st episode of Galactica 1980 we see two suits in use at the same time. So at least 2 must have existed seeing as the scene was not some sort of FX shot to show the 2 robots together.

Is it possible they made a second suit just for this show and couldn't match the original exactly and this is the museum piece in question? Also, usually more than one costume/prop is made incase something happens to first, so is it possible that this was a second suit incase something happened to the first? There are so many questions that hopefully can be answered at some point.

looking through some model kits and saw this. Match or no match for the whiskers?

I'm pretty sure the whiskers were wire of some kind. Probably just a thick armature wire. That way it wouldn't break off if the monkey took a noser into the scenery.

To me, they look exactly the same as if they were part of a model, but I guess wire could work. Also, I believe the round pieces are tire rims, but not sure from which kit yet.

Steve,
The reason I say that they probably aren't plastic model parts is that old prop builder's addage: "Never trust an actor with your prop!"

Having built my fair share of props for movies and television, I would have had a hard time justifying using a fragile plastic model bit as the whiskers on Muffit 2 because I would have immediately suspected it to break off under the delicate ministrations of Eve the chimp or her stunt double.

But you never know. Might have been a bad decision day in the prop department and they got REALLY lucky over the run of the show and the intervening years that they never broke off. However, I would also hasten to point out that the piece bridging the eyes to the muzzle is a 3 penny nail, so sombody was thinking about how sturdy this thing was to some degree.

Just my observations.

I guess anything is possible. The whiskers do seem a bit more "breakable" than any of the other model kit pieces on the face. I still haven't located the wheel rims used on the snout, but I'm still searching. Do we have any idea what the muzzle is made from?

No true idea. Could be a million different things and modified at that. My original solution was to scratch-build (lathe) a mold and pull a copy in vac-form.

Gordon I have supplied you with details, and photos of the Daggit you haven't seen before, but you didn't mention me or my site to help out with this quest of building a Daggit. I feel :cry Now since I have cried my heart out, I have a new glass of salt water for my fish tank :lol

One quick note: Making the shape of the head look right is a jerk and a half. I tired three times over on my initial daggit build and still didn't get it right.

There's something about the shape of the head and the connection it has with the body that makes it particularly hard to replicate without actually having a chimp in the suit!

Awesome photos! Thanks for posting and keeping this thread alive! I can't wait to see some finished daggits.

So? Get yourself a chimp.

I know, that didn't help.

Gene

Oh, puh-leeeeez! You don't think for a moment that I didn't do a google web search for a "1:1 resin Chimp kit" did you???

Well I did. As it turns out, with the right connections, getting a LIVE CHIMP is less expensive than getting a lifesized resin casting of one! LOL!!

Naw.... I'm just pullin' your leg.

But seriously, there's a lot about the soft-shape of Muffit that comes directly from the fact that it's built around a chimp that becomes difficult to replicate because it is so. Everything from the obvious (front legs longer than back legs) to the fact that the midriff isn't EXACTLY a circular cross section (its oval... cuz the chimp's midriff is oval... but it only appears to match up to the circle that is the top of the pelvis and the bottom of he ribcage).

Gordon has received the correct eye pieces and has given me permission to post the measurement of the eye diameter.

"The diameter of the eye dome (the clear part) is exactly 2.017"

Thanks to Gordon for the info.
