TBH Andrew, i added a wash to my build, as did Dan Satterthwaite, i think it does make it look right, i think ILM have used some form of wash or pastel in the detail of the hull/neck area, but it is very subtle if at all.
Try a burnt umber oil wash buddy over areas of your black, it brings out a grimy/aged look to the ship and gives some tone to the weather process, just spot it in certain areas, it works a treat!
