MOTU Sword of Power WIP

UPDATE on post #22

I'm not sure when I first decided I needed He-Man's Sword of Power, but it's safe to say that it happened while watching the original cartoon series. Probably pretty close to when I decided to one day own Stormtrooper armor.:lol

The Filmation style sword has always been my favourite as compared to the other comic, book and show styles. It's instantly recognizable and the whole shape screams "He-Man" to me.

I started off by finding a good picture of the sword, then scaling it up to a suitable size for me. This one is about 33" long, 6" at the widest point. It's a comfortable fit, and not too huge. The sides of this sword were drawn asymmetrically in this particular drawing so I chose the one that looked best to me and flipped it to trace the opposite side. As long as they're both very close to the same outline I should be able to cast two halves and slap them together with minimal cleanup. Might be able to get some nice flat wall-hangers that way, too.

I routed along the handle and guard to get it evenly rounded, then switched to a 45 degree bit for the blade. This allows me to clear away some excess material quickly, and leaves a nice area to continue refining the blade angle.

The next shot shows some of the diamond cross-section I'm working on getting into the blade. Hopefully this will leave a nice thick area in the middle so I can cast a rod into the blades for added strength. I'll have some cleaning up to do where the blade angle transitions into the guard area, but I'll save that for later.

The overall shape is coming together quite nicely so far, and I've also tapered the blade from guard to point so it won't be too thick. I may need to add a little thickness at the edges to help prevent chipping/breakage in those thinner areas.

I've almost finished roughing out this sword and I'm pretty impressed. The simplicity of the shape and choice of material are really making this easier than it could have been. Less than a day and I already have something that looks like a power sword!:cool

This close-up shows a little more detail of the relief and different planes of the guard section. I may replace the handle with some half-round doweling before molding. It's an easy cut-and-replace operation if I need it.

It's not 100% done, but I'm really eager to share the progress and hear your opinions. There's still a little clean-up to do in some areas, but overall I'm quite happy with it. I've been holding back from yelling "I HAVE THE POWER!!!" all day, but I won't promise that it hasn't been pointed at the cats a few times already.:lol

I'll post an update in a few weeks after I've got some silicone and resin and made a few castings. By that time I'll likely have sculpted up a jewel and setting to modify one casting into She-Ra's Sword of Protection for my lovely wife.:D

It's looking nice. If you decide to start offering copies of each of those please keep me in mind. And yes, I realize this isn't an interest thread. It's a great show off thread.

For the love of pete– I've seen people do this before, but not offer them for sale. Do YOURSELF a favor – when you've got a bunch produced, go offer em at He-Man.org. It'll be a license to print money! Trust me...

I highly suggest if you are casting this in two halves them glueing together that you hollow out the backs of them or its going to to too heavy.
it looks rather thick now

Thanks for the compliments, folks. Macrossmaster, that's a great idea. I'll keep you posted as things progress.

David Stokes, you've got a good idea about hollowing out the back. It's a little hard to tell, but the highest points are on the guard and are only 5/8" thick right now. The blade got much lighter as I shaped it down. I'll have to keep it in mind when casting. Congrats on getting a steel version, too!

well i dont have it YET..... still being made

In the cartoon series it gives the hero his powers, and is the one thing that would allow the villain to achieve his goals. You could say the entire series hinges around posessing it.

This cartoon series spawned two further animated series, a comic series and a live-action movie as well as countless merchandise, some of which is still being made today (He-man 6" statues). There's a new movie in the works, too. The line was originally conceived as toys for the Conan movie, but they realized it had a little too much violence and adult content for the youngsters.

Take the example of the McQuarrie pre-pro Vader helmet: it was drawn, influenced the look of the item, and was never physically made or seen in the movies. I would find it pretty hard to say JRX, Kropserkel or KooKoo's helmets don't constitute a prop.

Even ignoring those, you'd have to say any piece based off of a cartoon, anime, video game or comic series is not valid by that reasoning.

So in my opinion it's perfectly valid, which I think I've backed up sufficiently. Hope it didn't come across as defensive, just trying to show my own point of view.:)

No need to throw a disclaimer in your post, he was just trolling. You don't see anyone complaining about video game props, do you?

Nice work so far, can't wait to see the final buildup! :D

I'd buy two! I'd love one and my brother would go nuts for one. Excellent work!! Can't wait to see the finished piece

Your version looks fantastic. That really brings back the memories. I could actually be He-man....if he had a gut and not so many muscles:lol:lol:lol

Thanks again, guys. I'm still doing a little fine-tuning on the shape, but I fear I won't be getting it into silicone until after Christmas. Most of my weekends are already booked up with family functions, and the evenings are filling up fast as well.

I'll be sure to let you know when it's all set, though.;)

Any progress? Can't wait to see how this turns out!

Still just waiting for the spare cash for molding supplies to free up. Just means I'm farther ahead on some other little projects, though. Can't really say they're not related.:angel

I still have to round out the handle of the sword, but once I get even half of one cast things should start moving quickly. Need to get the "rivets" on the outside of the shield, too. Lucky for me it's the weekend!:lol
