Over in the JY there's a thread about a cool idea to produce a Monolith a la 2001, though in crystal. Having just watched the film on BluRay for the first time (my first disc in the format) and reading a bit in that thread, I got to thinking that it's past time that I build the small one (for a pod bay diorama down the road).
I recall (though I've just moved and the book is packed) that Bizony's book mentioned a few things about the actual monolith finish, so I'm wondering if any modelers have tried to duplicate it at scale, and what overall effect you achieved (I believe heavy use of graphite powder was mentioned? or have I completely lost it?)
