After seeing EvilFX's build for DragonCon, I decided to make a mini shep suit for my 8 year old nephew for halloween.
Here's what I have so far:

Re: mini foamshep n7 armor!

Sorry 'bout the lack of updates, was in vegas for a week for some fun time, then Madison, WI to work with a client. I'll post some progress tomorrow.

Re: mini foamshep n7 armor!

Ookay, since I've been working from home this past week I made some progress on the mini-foamshep.
Attached is a pic of the chestpiece as of about 45 mins ago:

All of the shaved areas will be covered in black/navy blue craft foam cutouts. I'll post pics of that tomorrow if I can finish it before heading back out on the road.

It took me so long to make this progress because after initially cutting out all my templates, I realized the proportion were wrong on most of the big pieces, and had to start from scratch.

Re: mini foamshep n7 armor!

That's my plan...and I will be too, right up until I get my vacformer built and make him a custom kid sized set of stormtrooper armor and his head explodes.

Quick update:

I've got all the pieces cut and all of the detail dremel work done. Unfortunately I'm short on time as I have to head to the airport in an hour, so looks like I'll be doing the final assembly/finishing at my sister's house next weekend. As long as it's done before Halloween I should be good though.

Attached is a pic of the majority of the parts, minus the curving neck piece and two of the smaller shoulder pieces. I've had to take some liberties with the overall design due to the small scale, like only having one level of blocks on the forearm guards instead of two, as they would look funny sticking out that far. I also didn't have time to finish my vacformer, so the tops of the thighs will have to go without a plastic puck for the belt to loop through. I'll figure something out to replace it though.

I also have some heat gun work I'll have to finish next weekend too, as well as fastening all the straps/buckles to the pieces.

Hopefully next weekend I'll have some pics of the finished pieces, and maybe some action shots with my nephew wearing it.

Re: mini foamshep n7 armor!

made some progress. got the chest and back piece finished at about 2am, now I need to fit them to my nephew and figure out where to attach the straps.
I ended up having to take more liberties with the design that I would have liked, mainly due to a ridiculous travel schedule due to work and having to finish the build at my sister's house with my tools a thousand miles away.

DONE! Finally.

Finished! And just in the nick of time too. Finally finished all the strapping and fitting at about 4:30pm, just in time for the trick or treating.
Took me about 7 weeks to build, and during those 7 weeks, I've spent M-F in Las Vegas NV, Madison WI, Wilkes-Barre(x2) PA, and Hartford CT. Been home for about 24 hours each weekend, cranked out some work on the costume each time, then shipped it up to my Sis's house in CT, and had a few 2am nights working on it to get it done. I'm amazed it fit him almost perfectly considering how I built it solely off of measurements I had my sister made, and built the majority of it over 1000 miles away.
I would especially like to send out thanks to EvilFX and Volpin for posting their build processes, as that greatly helped and inspired my build. I learned a lot, and hopefully my build quality and attention to detail on my next build.
Phew.
I think I'll take a week off then start on my nephews next halloween costume so this time I can take my sweet time.
Incidentally he said next year he want's to be a HALO Master Chief.
Attached are some pics of my nephew wearing it...and showing us his war face.
Happy Halloween everyone!
