Re: Michael Keaton as Batman

I like that Keaton brought more of a personality to the role, where as bale is dead serious to a point of stiffness whether Wayne or batman. But if there's any doubt to Bales acting abilities, check out The Fighter. He really nailed it in that one.

Re: Michael Keaton as Batman

Keaton was a great Batman. He understood that Bruce Wayne and Batman were 180 turns of each other. He just didn't look like a Bruce Wayne.

Re: Michael Keaton as Batman

The thing for me is - I liked the fact that Keaton looked like some normal guy who had something broken in his head - i do agree with Burton that Keaton does look like someone who would put on that suit and buzz the neighborhood.

I like the Nolanverse Batman but truth be told they did copy some scenes from Burton - the one that comes to mind the most is when the Joker meets with all the other ganglords - Nicholson played the same thing in Burton's movie. There are others but i can't remember them right now

Re: Michael Keaton as Batman

You look in Keaton's eyes and you kinda see that there's something off with the guy. Unlike Bale who just came off as... stoic, cold.

Keaton, even as (perhaps especially as) Bruce Wayne said more with a look than Bale says in a monlogue. You got a sense of angst, a sense of something hidden - yet, with a sense of a charisma... Bale just didn't do that for me, even if he might've had more of the overall look.

Re: Michael Keaton as Batman

I like Bale in the Nolan films and think he's a great actor, I just think he has a hard time understanding the Bruce Wayne/Batman character like Keaton. You can tell that Bale understands that Bruce Wayne is the mask and Batman is the real figure, but I think he doesn't quite understand how to portray it...dunno if that makes sense to some people. It's like he's trying too hard to pull off the playboy image while at the same time trying to mask the cold image of Batman.

Re: Michael Keaton as Batman

When I saw Keatons spaghetti arms it blew it for me. The suit can't do it alone. You need to back it up.
That's why they made the muscle suit. He had none.

There were moments in Batman that were quite good. But others annoyed me as well. Sending in the batmobile by remote control? Cowardly. Having Machine guns on the car? Against the concept.

But Bales voice annoys me at times too. And they blew up crap without regard for the passerby in the Joker chase.

Adam West was the best Bruce Wayne.

You feel that's what the character is? I'd but that Superman is the real character- Clark Kent is the mask but I don't think that's the way it is for Batman.

Re: Michael Keaton as Batman

As someone else already mentioned, I really think that Keaton understood the character better than any other person who has portrayed Batman. Terrific actor and I love him in almost every role he has done! It's a shame he decided to bow out after '92 Returns because he didn't want to be known for simply "Batman"

Re: Michael Keaton as Batman

Honestly, I like Bale's way of playing Batman... it gives the sense that Bruce Wayne has been dead since his parents were brutally murdered... And that Batman is really the only part of him left, Bruce Wayne is the mask.

Now for those who were saying that this fits Superman better... Superman has a different attitude towards his "mask", it's not even really a mask, it's... I think that Superman and Clark Kent are one in the same, they are the same head on a flipped coin, they both love "Truth, Justice, and the American way!" The only "mask" is that Superman has powers, and Clark Kent is clumsy.

Unlike the personalities of Bruce Wayne and Batman, a complete 180 degree turn, (Except to those who know that Batman's secret.) So when for the people who don't know about Batman, it makes Bruce Wayne's personalities completely different. But for those who do know the secret, it's like Batman is the real and Bruce Wayne is the disguise.

I think that Christian Bale pulled this off better in the new films vs Keaton in the original films.

For sure. As Shade88 pointed out, Bruce Wayne died when his parents died.

Well said. I am not sure if its because 89' Batman left a lasting impact on me as a kid, but to me Keaton IS Batman, despite how much I love the Bale flicks. I do appreciate Bale's interpretation and hamming up the outrageousnous of the Wayne character, and its a neat distinction, but like it has been said, its all in his eyes: that sad, "there is much more to me than meets the eye" look. And according to the making of, that is EXACTLY why Burton chose him! :thumbsup

Re: Michael Keaton as Batman

Keaton was the ultimate Batman. Loved Dark Knight but Keaton will always be Batman in my eyes.

Re: Michael Keaton as Batman

keaton sells "crazy" better than any other actor i've ever seen. THE DREAM TEAM is one of my favs.

i've always been curious how burton's batman would have turned out if sean young hadn't broken her collarbone during rehearsals. she was supposed to play vale, but fell off of a horse while practicing for a scene which was later cut from the movie. i think her look would have gelled way more with the gloomy art direction of the film.

jet... just sent you a pm!

"Batman" in 1989 was the first movie that I went to semi-costumed. Purple suit, yellow shirt and green bowtie, and friends of mine even wore Joker makeup! No pics, unfortunately :(

Oh yeah, Sean Young would have been great... I once was a big fan of Kim Basinger, then wasn´t, now am again, but Sean Young...

Re: Michael Keaton as Batman

I loved Keaton's Batman/ Bruce Wayne. I enjoyed him more in Returns... as he didn't get as much to do and the chemistry between him and Pfieffer was far more believable than him and Basinger.
