Metropolis Robot Completed!!! Aug-18-2011

Re: Metropolis Robot

Here's the progress pics for this week.

Torso:

-I have been cleaning up the corners and edges of everything, and I'm pleased with the results. I know it probably doesn't look like much right now, but it's inching along toward the finish line.

Head:

-I am almost done sculpting the "eyelids", and they should only need a bit more sanding and touch-ups.
-The eyes themselves are finished, hand shaped from aluminum sheet by myself. They fit perfectly, and look pretty damn good if I do say so.
-The magnetic attachment points for the front and back of the head are now in place, and should bet done in the next few days. There will be three points that hold the helmet together, along with an elastic and velcro faster that will hold the face on the wearer's head.

If the eyes are removable, you could also do some silvered lenses for improved vision if the costume needs to be a little more practical than the original.

Re: Metropolis Robot

Removable eyes, eh? Hmmm.Let me think about that. In order for the wearer to have as much visibility with the eyes we have now, they need to sit as close as possible the the wearer's eyeballs. To make them removable may put to much material around them, making the interior of the mask a bit cluttered, with the limited space.

Re: Metropolis Robot

Ok kids,

Here's the latest pics of her head.

The paint is only the first coat, and will be touched up and detailed when I can afford more paint.

The eyes are only taped in place for now, until I get her fully painted.

The 4 bars you see "supporting" her helmet are made of steel, and click into place with magnets, as does the locking points for the two helmet halves.

Re: Metropolis Robot

Here's some shots of Maria so far. These pics were taken today. Still some clean up on her eyes to go, and I need to make a new collar bone "clip".

I love this paint I'm using, but the color in the pics is off in every one of them. I'll post some detailed pics later of how she assembles.

I will start on the arms and legs in a week or two, but right now I 'm tired...

Re: Metropolis Robot

Thanks Richie!

She is finally starting look like something! How close to done are you? I have had to stop looking at your thread because I am so woefully behind in "the Great Race" we find ourselves in that I just need to focus. When I'm done, or at least closer to done we are really gonna have to compare notes, war stories, and design flaws... wish I hadn't made so darn many ;-) I'm striving to complete her before Sept. 1, so wish me luck.

Once again my friend, you rock, and I can't thank you enough for your support! Your work especially on your Maria is absolutely stellar, and one day, when both of our "Plastic Girlfriends" are finish we should have them meet face to face and see what happens. Will they party? Will they pole dance? Will they fight to the death in a no holds barred cage match? Who knows, but we gotta make that meeting happen to find out!!!!!

Re: Metropolis Robot

Sweet! Thanks Jessica!

My Niece, Stephanie recently visited and was extremely excited about this madness, so she demanded to try the suit on, and well... it fit her perfectly! I now have the exact "ideal" measurements for the model/actor to wear it. I still don't have much of the attachment points made, but I am incredibly pleased with how well it worked.

Currently for the last few weeks I have been having a heck of a time uploading ANY of the new pics, but I'll get some posted shortly. I've also been swamped with work, making the progress a bit slower than I'd prefer.

Re: Metropolis Robot

OK this is infuriating. After many attempts to upload pics over this month this is the only one that has made it through. I tired of messing with this for now, so here's the lucky winner. What do you all think?

Re: Metropolis Robot

Here she is folks, the one, the only, (well one of three I guess), the bodacious robot hottie herself, The False Maria!

She is nearly complete, I just need to finish her feet, which will be completed in the next few days. The feet you see in the full-body shots are made of foam, and are only meant to give a better Idea of what she'll look like completed.

The WIP boots you do see, are a collaboration between Richies Armor and myself. I started with his casts and had to modify them to work with my suit. The end result will be spectacular. FYI, if you have not seen Richies False Maria please do. It's amazing!

The only thing I don't have to finish her is one more can of paint, and 6 pints of Guiness. I am currently excepting donations for both...but pleas, don't open the Guiness before you place it in the mail...I've been to the brewery in Dublin, and they don't sell "5"-packs. Just sayin'. ;-)

Re: Metropolis Robot

What strikes me is that the Maschinenmensch predates the codification of robots by several years. A decade later the robot would be a box with arms, legs and pincers for hands. This design owes much to a different background, that of the Golem and Frankenstein, the strange alluring and often disturbing artificial human. The Maschinenmensch has the semblance of a machine, but instead it looks more like a sculpture, a living animate sculpture.

The Maschinenmensch resembles the actress who protrayed it, it has that same Greek profile, it is Helm's face seen as an expressionist sculpture. Was this done on purpose ? Lang insisted Helm portrayed her in a role that any of the hundreds of young women involved in the production would have been glad to fill in exchange for some money and a hot meal in the post-war Germany in the clutches of a depression.

Besides Tim who did a magnificent job on this one, several people are working on this iconic design and I salute their talent and their dedication to do her justice while awaiting further developments with great anticipation and trepidation.

Re: Metropolis Robot: Now Complete!!! Aug-18-2011

This is it folks, My False Maria is finally complete.

With the feet now done, I can finally look at the complete fruits of my labor with a sense of pride, accomplishment, and a pinch of the bitter sweet. I say Bitter sweet because I must soon let her go...and I only have 50% of the molds for her. That material is so ridiculously expensive it is impossible for me to afford. So, in other words Maria is actually a One-Of-A-Kind wearable sculpture, and if I can make another, that means the arms and legs, and back of her head will have to be made entirely from scratch...again.

But I digress. I will post more pics of her late, but for now... Behold my friends, the final piece of her puzzle, her big-ass feet.
