Megaman Volnutt Full Build

Hey everyone! Now that I got things kinda sorted out with my Vacuum Former I can start shifting focus to things I'm gonna make with it, which is kinda of a a bit of an odd thing.

See, I'm about 5' 11.5"(I just say 6' for simplicity) and only about 140lbs so I'm pretty tall-ish and pretty darn skinny which can make it a bit off for choosing a costume and what not as I like to "Fit" as much as possible in as many ways as possible. Considering that it can be kinda tough for me to pick something and before the last 6 months or so I've also needed to stay away from things like armor focused builds due to a lack of pretty much everything required to do those well! In fact I've always not wanted to attempt something I didn't think I could accomplish to a decent degree of.....accuracy is the closest word but it's not really accurate. Looking forward I realize I do need to relax my "standards" for myself in order for me to accomplish....well anything really, after all it is REALLY hard to know everything you need to do something without actually doing it!

So to that end I've picked something that should be pretty easy but should still give me a lot of opportunity to learn and figure things out;

MegaMan Volnutt from MegaMan Legends

It's a bit of an odd choice, it's basically one of the most "out there" of the megaman games being that it is essentially an AU outside of the Main storyline but for me, it was something I had rented one time way back when renting N64s and PS1s was the thing to do, aside from owning the console of course, and it just kinda stuck with me for all these years and only recently have I been to/remember to able to play it again fully and despite how rough everything felt about it for me it just had this great charm or something.

Now of course, the thing is that these days we have it really lucky when it comes to games and recreating things from them because almost everything is just so damned details in regards to in-game models and such. But for Megaman Legends well....lets just say it's not much of an exaggeration to say he was basically made out of cubes;

Luckily we can still infer a pretty decent amount and we also have drawn references as well;

But even these aren't perfect either! So we need to kind of mix and match a bit.

Overall color scheme from A
Torso and Shoulders* from B
Crotch, Forearms and Hands from A
Legs from A
Feet from B
BackPack from A

I stayed away form C mostly because it's a fairly large departure in terms of style in some areas and while strictly speaking it might be the easiest it isn't quite the Megaman I like.

But even then there are still some questions that need to be answered, like what does his blaster actually look like? You see it in game opf course but it's just a grey tip to teh rectangle that makes up his forearm so it's not all that much to go on really. I will probably spend a fair bit of creative time on this because it's something I want to both be easy to swap out so I don't lose my hand when I'm wearing it but still look like it fits with everything else.

Aside form thinking about tall this, I haven't done too much actual work yet, I've been stressing out a bit about my Vacuum Former the last week but now I can really dig into this so last night I decided to start in somewhat of an odd place, the backpack!

Obviously it's missing a few bits, namely the round button-ish things(I hate doing round things out of pepakura) but I think this is a pretty logical starting place due to how it has to connect with the back of the torso and because not only do I want it to be detachable, I also want to be able to open and let me actually put stuff in there! Not sure how I'm gonna do that yet....it doesn't even seem like it was designed to open to begin with so I'll definitely need to get pretty creative. I think I've got a pretty good scale but I'll need a hand from one of my roommates to check it properly.

In the meantime I think I'll start working on the forearm and work my way up to the shoulder, there will be lots of trial and error with getting the sizes right I imagine.

Cool project! And tall & skinny worked out well for doug Jones. And trust me, beats the alternative, I'm the same height and I have about 120lbs on you. :)

Yeah, I know I got things pretty good body-wise but at the same time, I would like to be a bit more filled out. I mean, I work at a furniture store and lift a lot of furniture and such, but my blood vessels have more definition than my muscles! xD I can hang a step ladder on my shoulder and not worry about it falling off without holding it because it's stuck on my shoulder spike.

So being borderline underweight isn't as great as one might make it out to be! xD

So I've let this sit for awhile, longer than I probably should have but oh well, the thing to remember is that no matter what your intentions are when costuming, it will always be a rush at the end to finish your costume.......ALWAYS!

Anyways, I used Pepakura and some basic 3D models to figure out the sizing and all that, even with these I plan to do the cutouts on the Shoulder and Forearm after the vacuum forming to make sure I can size them out nicely.

Today I picked up up a bunch of supplies today so hopefully I can crank out lots of progress on this in the coming weeks.

MegaMan Legends was my favorite series, glad to see someone doing this! Keep it up
Same here, something about it grabbed me way more than the "Standard" Megaman games even tohugh tI haven't been able to play it fully until recently! xD

Did a first pass on the thigh and shin pieces;

It ended fit pretty well for the most part considering it was the first pass. I did learn that my thighs are much chunkier than Megaman's so I'm gonna be doing more of a tapered cylinder for that! xD Used the first pass to figure out where there is room for improvement and I'm already working on a second pass model;

I also want to work on the crotch piece, I have some ideas to make it "chair friendly" so we'll see how that goes.

I'm also in the midst of experimenting with how I'm going to make the Bucks for this, I'm experimenting with the Pink Insulation foam and coating it with several layers of spackling, just having an awkward time getting the separate layers glued together, currently waiting on a test with some LePage Construction Adhesive, apparently up here in the Great White North Liquid Nails isn't a thing and thier website seems to be not working right now, OH WELL! xD

Mostly 1 as it's the one I've played, more details are explained in the first post! ;p

Ok, I was just checking because the drawn reference you posted is all different concepts for what he could have looked like in Megaman Legends 3.
I just wanted to make sure you were aimed in the right direction.
Including the grey arm joints from Legends 2. He had the lighter blue arm joints in Legends.
So if you are going for the first game it would be best just to follow the in game model.

What I like to do when making costumes is to see how other people approached them. If what they did is to my liking I try to add it to my arsenal.
Here is the best Megaman Volnutt costume I could find. I think his costume could give you some nice ideas of how to build this costume.

Yeah, that's why I was specifically mixing and matching to get the right look. I think with the selections I've made its almost spot of for the game model, not sure what exact color scheme I'll be doing thought, I like the Blue/Grey-Blue used on A over the Blue/Teal used in B and I might be limited based on how I go about painting....we'll see.

So I wasn't able to pry apart the test piece I used for gluing the foam together so I got to work on my first few pieces for the arm bucks;

My "sneaky" idea of cutting out contoured layers instead of just making a big even block might give me issues but we'll see, these are the smallest pieces I'll be doing so they're fair game for trial and error.

I've also assembled my second pass of the Thigh and Shin parts, I got a really good fit on the Thigh, I do want to shorten it a bit to give me room to bend my knee to at least 90 degrees! xD Next I want to take a look at the feet next along with a 3rd version of the thigh.

Worked on the Foot some, pretty happy with how the leg is turning out.

LegPepaSecondPass_zpsf03a28d2.jpg

Chunky Thighs aside I think it turns out really nicely proportioned, I do have a few things I want to fix on the Shin still, mostly just to make sure I can bend my knee without pinching myself but otherwise things are looking good, in a few hours I'll be checking on my foam arm blocks to see how they turned out and start shaping them so more pics to come later today.

As I thought, ended up with some awkward gluing gaps but I'm going to be forging ahead regardless on this piece as it's basically the sacrificial trial bit. So I started carving it down to get the basic shaping in there.

ArmFoamShapingA_zps3d5cf7c5.jpg

Turned out pretty nice, still pretty rough but given that I'm gonna be slapping on a few layers of spackle anyways so I'll focus more of my serious sanding efforts at that stage.

ArmFoamShapingB_zpsc17aca3b.jpg

Clearly I'm not all that great at applying spackle, ah well gotta learn some time! xD One thing I did forget/not consider is some way to hold the buck to let me apply it all over without messing it up with my fingers. definitely a lot of sanding in my future! xD

This is looking nice.
What is that pinks stuff you are carving called, and were did you get it?

It's just regular insulation foam, should be available from most hardware stores in multiple thicknesses. It is proving to be somewhat awkward to work with, whether it's due to the material itself or just my inexperience I can't say yet! xD

It's not you, it's the material. I've worked with the stuff for theatrical sets in the past. In terms of "getting it to look like what you want" it has a high rating on my stubborn scale.

The pep work looks great, really clean. Keep up the good work!

Yeah I can see what you mean but on the other hand I can't help bu think that having more appropraite tools and experience could go a long way to getting better results, ah well, as long as learning happens and you don't give up pushing forwards regardless.

Heh, the Pep stuff is one area where it's good to be a "novice" 3D artist because I can just come up with something on my own, and paper is pretty cheap all things considered! xD

Then I can go back and make proper templates for use on the foam and what not.

A few layers of spackle and some sanding, them some primer and more sanding I'm pretty happy with how it's turned out;

ArmFoamShapingC_zpsef730f69.jpg

It's still pretty rough(just been using 100 grit so far) but aside from a couple really bad divots and the bottom edge it's pretty smooth so far.

Speaking of divots, any tips for spot filling? So far I've been just applying thin layers across the entire thing but I don't need that at this stage. I'm guessing I'd just apply little blops where needed and carefully sand them down most of the want and do a final primer/sanding pass to make sure it's all even then I should be good to go in with the finer grits of sandpaper?

Following on some advice from Talaaya(Check out her Samus Varia Suit build!) I made a supply run this morning for spot potty and other assorted bits and got to work;

ArmFoamShapingD_zps9113cd58.jpg

Not too much on this piece because the foam shaping went really well, I kind messed up the other arm piece I'm working on so that will likely take more work. Almost there! xD
