Mavel Comics at it again...Tony Stark out as Iron Man

this really doesnt bother me, as long as they are sticking to a college girl genius reverse engineers tonys suits.. and as for being a black girl that doesnt bother me either.. funny marvel is also doing this with the kick-ass series, continuing the story but as a black girl

being a HUGE fan of kick ass this also doesnt bother me at all and hopefully with revive the franchise and finally bring us kick-ass 3 in theaters!

Well yes, lets be honest, its pretty difficult to come up with any new "super hero" concepts these days, with nearly all the variations of special powers and origin themes used up. So its far easier to use a current character IP but spin it in a different direction for a while. Afterall many of these "heroes" have been around for decades and just about everything that can have happened to them ,has happened. Hence by making these deliberately and provocative changes to the super hero characters identities, they stop the franchise from becoming stale and predictable.
Personally I think this was designed to do exactly what its done ,which is to generate a huge multimedia storm of interest and social comment that is almost completely cost free advertising. This has blasted its way everywhere ,just like the Thor change did, so its another canny move by Marvel.
And hell, if it sells more then kudos to the marketing department, thats what they are there for, and it continues the comics run. And if it also brings more female fans to the scene then I'm sure there will be plenty of the younger generations of comic geeks who will be more than happy for that to happen. Its the 21st Century folks and its called progress.

Shredder is no longer japanese. He's Chinese. Splinter is no longer a rat, he's a panda. Oruko Cho started out in life as a panda poacher. one night, while breaking into a home, he tried to kill a panda, but the panda fought back and scarred his face. Cho managed to kill his owner, Hamato Chu, and the panda left despondent. on the way, he got mutated and is now a wise old panda who teaches kung fu to four mutant rats he found in a abandoned chinese restaurant.

Brilliant idea. same story, different nationality.

It's not progress, it's laziness.

IF you can't think up a power that's not already done, get out of the business.(how about a guy who can draw an image of a item and bring that image into 3D reality just by reaching into the paper? Boom, new power, i hope) if you can't think up a new crazy story for the joker and want to rehash the laughing fish for the 5th time.....get out of the business. if you want to throw leonardo through the window all battered up for the 6th time, because you want to do your take on it rather than come up with something new, GET OUT OF THE BUSINESS!

there are so many people out there with new ideas, or twists on old ideas that would love to be given a chance, but because of 'progress' like that, and people not wanting to risk either new untested ideas or untested people....you get Oruko Cho and Alien Ninja Turtles. same stories rehashed, only now...'THEY ARE ALIENS!'

or.. retell the first two ghostbuster movies beat for beat, only now, they are women!

See the problem here?

saw a quote on imdb from phil hartman that, slightly modified, could fit here too..
>>Reminds me of Phil Hartman's quote when he left SNL
The shows are getting less sophisticated. There's less political satire. The younger audience loves Adam Sandler. He appeals less to the intellect and more to that stand-up sensibility of "Let's go out there and be insane.">>>

'The talent is getting less creative. there's fewer original stories. The younger audience loves mediocrity. they won't give Puma Man, Man with the powers of a puma a chance because to them the idea looks ridiculous...but will flock to see Black Female Tony Stark doing the same Tony Stark iron man stories over again'

I don't think Riri's stories will be the same as Tony's by a long shot. Fighting in that armor is only part of IM and Riri is clearly not just Tony Stark with a gender swap. Get real.

I wasn't a fan of the movies but I was a fan of the comic when it was originally published. The think with Kick Ass it was that literally anyone could be the character; all one had to do was buy a green swim suit and carry lead pipes. With this iteration, I can buy it as someone inspired by the original Kick Ass and donning the mantle themselves but in a completely separate situation and attitude as to why they would.

I still don't get the need to take an existing hero and do a massive change to it to build up the character to spin off. Add the character to the main title who works with (in this case) Tony Stark/Iron man for a good while, and THEN spin it off. I know, it doesn't grab headlines which is the entire purpose of this crap. Headlines. If there's no headline, the sales won't budge, so we have to go sensational to generate the sales.

I'd bet those higher thor sales tapered off after a bit as well. No more people will be reading thor 18-24 months after the fact than were before. But that short lived bump makes it look good, right?

My nephew loves Falcon more than the rest of the avengers. His xmas wish list was a Falcon costume. He got and my sister said he wears it all the time. We went to disney world and i think at the hotel we got pirate eye patches. He was nick fury nearly the entire vacation. If you couldn't guess, he's white. The color of the hero only limits your ability to pretend to be a character if you let it. I'd go so far as to say if you're a minority and you can't play around as superman because superman is white, and you're not, you're the one seeing race.

The originals were written from the POV of the writers at the time, who yes, were white. Sadly, that's the way the world was then. You cannot change that. No, things aren't the same way today. To move forward, you put YOUR stamp on YOUR time. You don't change someone else's work to prop up your own.

As far as a new (to me at any rate) hero, i couldn't give a rat's @#$% as to their heritage to be honest. After the first scene in Civil War with Black Panther I though (out loud as well) I want to see a lot more of this guy! I didn't know squat about him going in, but i'm fairly hooked now. Give me a good hero/heroine and a good story and i'll be hooked, regardless of the heritage/sex/whatever of the hero. Changing an existing hero who's been around 50-60 years or more to appease PC attitudes? No. It's a massive turn off.

I thought the same about Black Panther, and Falcon before him. I'm more interested now in Black Panther than Dr.Strange.
Both of which i know nothing about.

This is just the modern version of " Black Face". Just like the SJW fascism is the new McCarthyism. Of course it's alright when that side does it. They can never be racist, sexist, of any other kind other kind of " ist " . They are the paragon's of virtue. Never sullied by the sins of the fly over states. Well, I vote with my wallet. I'll watch my DVDs and Blu-rays, and hope they'll get a clue eventually. Not holding my breath mind you, ;)

Marvel Entertainment is not Marvel Studios, thank goodness.

Once upon a time Marvel Studios (movies), run by Kevin Feige, was under Marvel Entertainment (comics and TV), run by Ike Perlmutter. It's no secret that Feige and Perlmutter clashed heads over creative control of the movies that were coming out. It all came to a head, it seems, with the production of Captain America 3 where the Russos made the case that they would have to do Civil War which would involve getting RDJ who is not contractually obliged to make this film. Feige was creatively on the same page as the Russos but Ike, who is notoriously frugal, absolutely didn't want to spend the millions to get RDJ. In the end Marvel Studios was pulled out from under Marvel Entertainment and Feige now answered directly to Disney. Some folks posited this shakeup in Disney was a sign of impending doom and tried to portray Feige as a creative bully dissolving the creative council of Marvel Entertainment. In truth, it seems, Ike Perlmutter, was getting in the way of Marvel Studios and this was the best way to handle it.

So, Stark is out as Iron Man? That's all on Marvel Entertainment. Blame Ike.
Captain America as a HYDRA agent? That's all on Marvel Entertainment. Blame Ike.
Female Thor? That's all on Marvel Entertainment. Blame Ike.

I think Marvel Studios, under Feige, without Ike's input, is only going to give us better movies.

i don't follow the whole business side of it, so that was a bit confusing, but the sum up allowed me to get the gist of it ;o).

and people wonder why comics are failing.

maybe they jsut need to go bold. retire the old '50's white guy heroes' and just start fresh. but somehow i doubt they can be as creative.

Also found this video. I like this guy.

It was during an interview with the Russos (KRCW Business Podcast) where I heard them first mention that the restructuring that took Ike Perlmutter away from Marvel Studios was pretty much due to Captain America: Civil War.

The rest of the story was pulled together by Midnight Edge.
