Masterpiece Models 1/10 scale Parasaurolophus

At last.

Finally got around to posting something on these forums.

Been caught up in the last couple of years building Star Destroyers to be auctioned off at the UK Garrison (part of the worldwide 501st Star Wars costuming group) I decided it time for a wee change and move on to the titular kit. Not complaining about the Star Destroyers as they raised an awesome amount (in my eyes) for charity.

About 18months work between to two of them and I have built some more Zvezda SD's for friends and now don't want to do anymore for a couple of years at least.

Anyhoo! This thread is about Dinosaurs and in particular my favourite of all and when I discovered Masterpiece Models had these I just had to get one.

This is actually my second one and the last one made until the company gets around to retooling it. My first kit lost an argument between two mental Yorkshire Terrier pups and a p***ed off cat. My fault for not making sure the man cave door was securely closed.

As I said this is my second one and it is a "beast" of a kit coming in at 38 inches long and 15inches high.

I have been using Vallejo Air paints pretty much exclusively and so far so good. There where a couple of bad seams where her tail meets the main body but I finally got to use Epoxy sculpt after it was recommended to me by the You Tuber "Dinosaur Dungeon".

The build has been slow but steady with first the head being attached and the seam there wasn't too bad TBH and some epoxy sculpt and Mr Surfacer were used and that was that.

Next item was to attached the tail and as the model is so big and heavy I first used CA glue to stick everything together and then using cocktail sticks I managed to get generous amounts of 5min epoxy into the gaps and we had rock solid joints.

The seam on the body/tail took nearly a week to get sorted but I was in no hurry and I finally got to a point where I was happy with it.

Next all four legs where attached and the seams where tackled with the epoxy sculpt once again.

Grey primer was next on the agenda.

Before I went any further I had decided to use Taxidermists cats eyes for this big girl and just started off with a small drill bit and slowly worked up to 8mm which was the size of the eyes I had bought.

My original plan was to pop the eyes out again before painting but they were a bit awkward to get out in the first place and I didn't want to scratch the model once she had been painted so used some canopy glue on them and once the painting started the eyes had a good coat of liquid mask applied.

I did some pre-shading first and this is where it started to go a bit pear shaped as I later noted I had gone a bit too far on the legs with too many stripes.

Thought I would carry on and see how it went but those stripes came back to haunt me as once again it was just a bit too much.

Before the next bit I had started on her crest and was well happy with how it looked.

Her head and body turned out great but those legs really bugged me so she was reprimed and I started again.

And this is where we are now. I did some more pre-shading as before but barely touched her legs.

That's it so far and thanks for dropping by and having a look. I already have the base she'll be mounted on and I will be putting sound into as I found some sounds that scientists reckon these animals where able to make when a perfectly preserved skull was found and the intricate air passages through the crest were copied and the sounds made - quite eerie when you hear them.

Awesome job so far. That is an impressively large kit. I've only done two dinosaurs. Both resin. A triceratops and a t-rex. I found them enjoyable, but the seams sure were tough. The next hardest part was figuring out what colors to paint them. The possibilities were endless.
Looking forward to your progress.

Thanks for the comments folks.

Got a long way to go for sure but having a blast getting her together.

Back again for another update.

Like I said in a previous update I went back to the start and reprimed her and started all over again.
This time I went for a more brownish look over all and really pleased with how my girl looks like so far.

I can't go any further just now as I ran out of the Vallejo Brown/Green which is a lovely golden brown in colour so that's been ordered and should be with me by the weekend. I also have to respray her belly, neck and under her tail that light brown (heavily mixed with white) and I still have loads of that left. Once that is done and if that paint has arrived I should be on the final stretch for this build. I have some gloss coat coming and the plan is to give her a wash to pick up all the wrinkles and folds in her skin. Gone for a Plasticoat gloss spray as I didn't fancy using an airbrush on her to apply that gloss. Still not 100% on my left arm after breaking my collarbone and now have a plate holding it together. Got some spare resin pieces from another build and I'll spray them in the colours that this model has and use that to see if there is any reaction with the Plasticote.

Bit of a bummer having ran out of paint but patience is a virtue.

A quick update and I hope you like what you see. Still got a long way to go but slowly but surely getting there.

Thanks for watching.

And we're done (sort of).

I got the big girl finished up last night and all that is left to do is work on her final base at the weekend. The sound system is being put together as we speak and I should get it early next week.

After so many kits crashing and burning recently I really had lost my will to live regarding model kits but this one was a lot of fun to put together. So much so I keep badgering the maker to get on with the retooled version so I can get another one. Been looking at smaller versions and toying with getting one which although smaller still comes in at 20 inches (from Dan's Dinosaurs I believe).

Before I waffle on too much here's the pics I took once the dullcote had dried. I thought I had screwed up with the wash used to bring out all the folds and creases in her skin but it came out pretty good I reckon.

Next time you see her she'll be on her final display base.

And my big girl is done. Say hello to Dina.

She's a resin kit and at a little over 38" in length she is even bigger than the 2018 SSD I built. Painted mostly with Vallejo Air paints apart from her eyes which are taxidermist cats eyes and she really follows you around the room like some old painting. The base is kitted out with Tamiya Texture Paints brown earth and green grass with some inscale dried grass here and there.

The part of this build that I am most proud of is her "voice" which is quite eerie when you hear it. It is apparently the sounds this animal could have made after a almost perfectly preserved skull was unearthed with all the intricate air passages intact. It must have been an incredible site to have a whole herd talking to each other.

Enough of me waffling so here's some pictures of my girl,

And a short video for you to listen to a "song" from the past. I hope you like her.
