I happened to catch Master and Commander: The Far Side Of The World, today. The cat and mouse game between the two ships, the friendship of the ship’s doctor and the captain, a ship patrolling the farthest reaches of the frontier, etc. all of this made this film feel like a Star Trek: TOS story. I can see how another 19th century sailing series, Horacio Hornblower, inspired The Original Series.

Funny enough, it looks like I am not alone in my opinion:

I only saw it for the first time a few years ago myself and it's a fantastic movie! As you said, if only the modern studios cranking out substandard Trek had taken a cue from this movie, we might have ended up with something worth watching....

Couldn't agree more with both Master and Commander AND Galaxy Quest, lol. I started reading the Hornblower books back in High School because of their influence on Gene Roddenberry and eventually got hooked on Patrick O'Brian's books because of their debt to C.S. Forester as well. Saw the film in the theater and was disappointed that it tanked at the box office as I was really hoping there would be MORE.

It also sucks that because it tanked at the box office the movie studio won't but any $$$ into the DVD/Blu-Ray/whateverformat. The blu ray is a mildly better presentation than the DVD (at least in terms of the video the audio is reference quality) and while I am hoping for a 4K HDR transfer that finally lets the video shine, maybe with a new ATMOS mix, I am not holding my breath.
