Marvin the Martian Raygun

I've seen a few posts about cartoon guns here, so I thought I'd share. I had a friend who was very into Marvin the Martian. I drew his name for a Christmas exchange awhile back, and I thought I would build the raygun for him.

Some of the members here know my choice of materials, which is cardboard (both corregated and cardstock), that I used in construction. I even found the WB raygun blast sound effect that I recorded on a Radio Shak sound device and incorporated into the constuction.

As you can see I also found a modeling sheet of the character to glue onto the inside of the box. What you don't see is on the opposite side if the box lid I had found a great ACME graphic that was also glued to the box.

Nice. I want one!

What did he do when he opened the box and saw it for the first time?

He had a big smile on his face and said a big thank you. He then showed it off to friends at his favorite local bar and was offered $300.00 for it which he refused! That made me rather proud or my work.

Did he not use it to destroy earth? It was blocking his view of Mars!

NICE prop!!!!!! I love when comic/cartoon props become 3D reality pieces!

very nice, I could use that

That is so cool!!! I love Marvin the Martian! I'm curious as to how you built the Raygun, it looks like resin! How did you disguise the cardboard? Awesome job!

I start all my projects with full scale drawings which I make copies of to use as patterns. I'll affix the part needed on a sheet of corregated cardbord and layer up more corregated to the desired thickness and cut out the part. Once I have the "core" of the model completed, I add a veneer of cardstock to hide the core and provide the almost finished look. Sandpaper is used where needed to smooth out the seams and to give shape. I then use a mixure of white glue and water to paint over the model to seal it and finer sandpaer is used after the glue has dried. I'll then spray the model with urethane before spraypainting and a final spray coat of urethane. The urethane is what gives it the resin look.

I'm a big fan of both Duck Dodgers and Marvin!

If anyone surprised me with this as a gift I'd have been floored with a big silly grin on my face!!!

Great stuff.:cool
