Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

This coming week is the last week my husband is going to watch with me unless this next episode blows him away. I have a feeling it'll be yet another show I'll be watching alone on weekend mornings while working on freelance jobs.

Hate to be a debbie-downer, but I am done. Agents of Shield is off the DVR. :(

Can't blame you. I'm hanging in there for the next one because I have the hots for the female WHO doctor from World War Z and it looks like she's turning up in this next episode, but if she doesn't make it through the episode I'll end up letting the recordings sit until they get pushed off. It doesn't excuse the bad writing, but I imagine it's hard trying to convey years and years of comic history in forty minute chunks to an audience they have to assume isn't familiar with any of it.

I still think it's only fair to give it a second chance when season 2 comes around, if only because I want to believe Whedon wouldn't let his name be attached to something this mediocre (at best), but my expectations are low. I don't know what I expected considering the network seems to program at suburban moms.

EDIT: Not trying to use "suburban moms" derogatorily. Just not my sensibility. If you look at ABC's programming lineup, I don't imagine there's much crossover between the Desperate Housewives/Grey's Anatomy/Scandal audience and comic book readers.

This isn't a full season of shows is it??? I thought I read somewhere that it was only 6 episodes... But the second season it was picked up for is a full 22 weeks...

I knew they got picked up for a full season, wasn't sure it that would be a continuation of this season, or a short season, with a time between, then a full season.... Wasn't sure if they had already shot the full 28 episodes already...

The show is doing well in the ratings.

I think the show will only get better. I can think of more shows that became better in latter seasons than shows that were awesome from the first episode. Its doing well enough to not get canceled. I expect them to take their game up a notch very soon.

I love the show. It's exactly what I thought it would be.

I could see it becoming more militaristic in style as it progresses.

I will say this. I'm not really into this show anymore, but it has inspired me to pick up a subscription to the Marvel Unlimited Archive. I've never been big in to comics, but the films and this show have made me want to read more. So they got 60 bucks out of me. :)

I want to like this show, but they're not giving me much reason to. I don't give a crap about anyone but Coulson and May, and they aren't even multi-dimensional. The characters are bland with no chemistry at all after four hours. It shouldn't take anyone in the Whedon family a quarter of this time to make me care about a character enough to miss them if/when they inevitably die.

They're not being remotely subtle either with the "something's up with Coulson, wink wink nudge nudge" stuff. It makes the Doctor Who arc words/images/what-have-you seem subtle enough to miss by comparison.

Agreed. I really hate being beaten over the head every week with some comment about Coulson.
It's sounding like a broken record already. To be fair, Coulson is so damn boring and one dimensional to begin with, I thought he was a freakin' robot-creature-reanimated-thing before his death in the Avengers film. The character makes Data from TNG seem like Benny Hill..

The show may apparently be doing well in key demos but in that 18-49 group they are unfortunately catering to the 18 year olds. There is very engaging writing or character interaction that appeals to this 44 year old of average intelligence. I want to support the show but my interest level is equal to Melinda May's ability to emote.

This is exactly my mentality too. Almost all of my favorite sci-fi shows had pretty terrible first seasons. Stargate SG-1? Star Trek TNG? Most of the first season episodes make me cringe, and they went on to have incredible runs that lasted for years.

I dunno, there is so little on Tv that I actually look forward to watching. I'm starting to really like this. No, it's not super great, but I enjoy it.

Sorry if this idea has been mentioned but last night I was catching up on the latest episode of the continuing excellence that is Homeland when a thought struck me.
If Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. were written as a drama with the tone of Homeland the show would absolutely rock!
The show needs a real-world feel dangerous public threat and agents within the organization of S.H.I.E.L.D. that appear to behave like an organization with intelligence. For a supposedly worldwide organization we're stuck with the dingbat squad. It feels like Scooby-Doo and the gang solve another mystery..

I think people are being too harsh. We're still getting introduced to the characters. It's only 3 episodes in. It's still interesting, if not outstanding. I'm giving it at least through the end of season.

Last night's episode was better, but it had the, "Let's the the pretty people naked." issue. Scorch made for a good villain.

Anyone else get a feeling of satisfaction when Skye opened the door and saw Agent May standing there?

I loved how May icily said "Get. Dressed."

A lot of people complain about Ming Na Wen's supposed inability to emote, but I see it more like she is a very closed-off professional who has always kept people at arm's length, probably because of the nature of being The Cavalry. The same is true, to a lesser extent, of Agent Ward. There is no room for emotional attachments in their lives, and now they are both in a situation where they HAVE to forge bonds with teammates and learn to directly rely on others in the field.

That said, you could slowly see the ice melting around Ward and ever so slightly around May. The way May said "Get. Dressed." showed me that she was starting to warm up to Skye, and that betrayal infuriated her. It was a subtle bit of emotion from Ming Na Wen, but it was there.

Kerr Avon is right though. This show is still in its infancy. The cast is still developing their own chemistry with each other and with the crew. If you think this show is boring/lame/slow, think back to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. BtVS is widely regarded to be one of the best shows to have ever come out. Now, go back and watch the first season. It was utterly atrocious. The writing was not that great. The dialogue was terrible. Cinematography needed work. Special effects were bad. It wasn't until Season 2 that things got better.

People need to remember that shows like 24 or Firefly or Leverage, where everything is pretty much perfect from the get-go, are the exception, not the rule. Shows need time to grow into their own skin.

I would have felt a greater sense of satisfaction if May would have put a bullet in Skyes head...

can't say i'm in love with the show, can't say I hate the show. My expectations of this show was Heroes spiritual successor... I REALLY wanted to see the indiscriminate rounding up of mutants from the perspective of the Agents. Oh well... I guess I can enjoy it for what it is... meh.

That's pretty much assuming SHIELD is an evil organization then. Sounds like your expectations are what's wrong here.

And it's better than Heroes second season.

If you want 'evil organization rounding up mutants' then you should watch "The Tomorrow People" That's pretty much exactly what it is, except it's more from the viewpoint of the mutants
