Marty McFly Orange Vest ???

A while back I saw an ebay listing for the "actual" brand of the Marty McFly down Vests. I can't seem to find that now for the life of me and wonder if that knowledge even exists.

First off what the HELL color is that thing - I'm rather convinced it's a burnt Orange - but am only basing that on what I see compared to other colors.

Then of course What is the Brand of the Jacket ? Not a look-a-like.

Any other Marty McFly Resources are apreciated as the information on his costume is scattered all over the net and there doesn't seem to be one source for all things McFly as there is for Indy, Mal, or Sparrow.

Cheers!

I don't know if anyone really is sure about the brand. There have been plenty of debates on the color alone. haha. I would like to know the same if any of that information is available. Has anyone seen the costume in person? Does it still exist? I don't recall ever seeing a picture of it after the film.

I've never seen any display pics (which i find rather odd) and production/ behind the scenes documentation.

There was a guy on ebay about 5 months ago i believe who had what he claimed to be the exact make of the jacket and it looked SPOT on. I wish i had at least saved the damn info.

Is there some kind of a resource for us poor BTTF costumers ?

I've actually always wanted the button-down shirt he wears.

Hey mate - the shirt is actaully a Shah Safari Checkered shirt - thers a guy who ordered a bunch on thia blog : Delorean and Back To The Future | Blog about Deloreans

And PM received and responded to !

And I'm not basing it on JPG's but those are just being used more for reference of Style rather than color. I'm pretty convinced it's a burnt Orange since the entire movie its called a life preserver and those are typically orange - plus it just looks orange to my eyes.

Thanks guys !

I might be talking out of my hat here, but I remember at a non-profit training session we were told that the IRS Fair Market Value for an item is often calculated using ebay auctions, and that you can contact them to get access to their archived listings. So it might be worth emailing them and seeing if you can get them to pull the item for you (hell, say its for a charity auction or something).

not a terrible idea - but I wonder now if the guy in the ebay auction really did have the correct thing and if it'd be worth the trouble.

I may give it a go though either way.

The key difference that I always look for is the stitching pattern near the pockets, in the last 10 years of ebay searching I haven't found any that matched the screen version. Many had the color, type of buttons, number of puffy partitions all correct, but always missed the mark on that stitching.

As for the brand, some have speculated it as North Face, LL Bean or Eddie Bauer. I would go with the last two, cause they appear more closer to Marty's design. Searching for "LL Bean Goose Down Vest" or "Eddie Bauer Goose Down Vest" on ebay will give plenty of results, alternatively also try adding "vintage" to those keywords.

Thanks for the tips mate - and yeah the pockets are what make it such a ***** to nail - I've been through hundreds of these ebay listings over the years and can never find anything that looks 100%

And i'm also becoming 100% convinced that the vest is a burnt orange - if you look at any screen caps of the jacket next to a pure red (flags a.k.a. Re-elect Red Thomas) the jacket stands out as being a totally different hue.

Here's 2 examples of the jacket pocket:

Now here's an example of color - notice the flag on the left side of the screen as compared to Marty's Vest. If the vest is indeed red then it is faded and they must of used a light tungsten filter or something. But here's the comparison pic:

As someone who lived through the 80's...I think maybe you're looking in the wrong place. Try searching for Winter Jacket's with removable liners. That's what it appears to be to me...I had one made by Wrangler that I wore every day with the outer shell removed, and it looked almost identical. It attached to the inside with little elastic straps that came out from under the shoulder area.

Interesting hypothesis - any examples? I didn't turn up any luck in my search - just a lot of crafts and weird stuff.

I did - I would just wait another day or so before he gets back to you. He says there are some available !

Ah, he just replied.

With shipping to the UK, it's about 5 x what a close enough would cost... need to decide if I'm going to go all in on this! :)

In regards to the button-down shirt that Marty wears, you might hit up "Indy Magnoli" here on the RPF. If there is enough interest, he might be able to produce them for you since he already produces several other lines of replica & movie inspired clothes.

If you haven't already checked out his site, check it out here:

Thanks DS - I just purchased the safari shirt though and for much cheaper than a Magnoli production I'm sure.

But I would LOVE to get his McFly denim Jacket, but $450 for a denim Jacket is quite absurd for my broke @ss. And honestly, I could see that jacket maybe being $250 - and even then it'd still be pretty damn pricey ! Magnoli's must use only gold thread and feed his oompa loompas only the finest caviar !

The price is mostly in the tailoring. I've told people before, I could make a jacket out of paper for you and it'd still likely be around $325! ;) Our McFly jacket also has a custom printed lining.

The shirt would require a large run of fabric, but we could do the vest as a one-off commission if anyone is interested...

Kind regards,
Magnoli
