Mannequin

With polyfill, do you mean that stuff that looks like cotton candy (but sadly don't taste half as good)? Were the whole 5 lbs required or was it just how much came in the box?

yep, that's exactly what I mean...I had a small amount left from working on a previous craft project and I knew I would need a lot more (we were doing both myself and my significant other- I had moments when I questioned the necessity of making two instead of using one for both of us- but I'm a fairly curvy chick and his measurements were very different, so we needed them fairly accurate to our measurements for fitting purposes- plus there were times when we both needed to work with our costumes on our respective mannequins)... I looked around online and found this: Morning Glory Premium Fiberfill, 5-pound - Walmart.com it was a good price and I knew it would be plenty (I didn't want to run out of it and have to put things on hold while I ran out to get more). The 5lb box comes fairly crammed with the stuff, it was actually bulging out a bit, and when I opened it, it expoded! It was enough for both of us, but ONLY for our torsos (like traditional dress forms)- my partner wears a men's large shirt and I'm a size 16 in women's clothing, to give an idea of how much more or less one might need to do their own body.

Dress form, or mannequin? :p

Male dress forms are sometimes hard to find. Try sewing stores or websites specializing in fashion equipment.

Mannequins, such as found in stores, are usually not really human proportioned, but good enough to display and hold things for you. Best way is to talk to department store managers, and leave them your contact info for in case they have one to toss out or sell. Store closing sales where they are selling off "fixtures" are also a good place to find these. I got my mannequin when Sears was going to throw one out, and my aunt who works there saved it for me.

I'm going to put that in my material folder for reference. Thanks for sourcing that for me.

Now that I look up the terms it's surely a dress form. Only problem is that in swedish the two are pretty much interchangeable, or nearly used as such in modern times. Or at least that's how it was in my immediate surroundings growing up.

Concerning male dress forms, it's hard enough to find any at all anywhere near where I live, and even if there is one the chances of it being my size as well as properly made and prized decently pretty much plummets to a number in the lower decimal area. It was just easier to make one, at least for me.

The tips for getting your hands on a mannequin seems good though. I'm going to try that out and see if it pays of any time in the future.

I haven't read all the posts, so I appologize if this is a repeat of anything above.

ebay is the cheapest mannequins that I have found. It is unlikely that you will find a mannequin that matches you body very well, and they are often posed, rather than natural stance.

Duct tape dummy is relatively cheap, and MORE EFFECTIVE if you use Packing Tape instead of Duct Tape. Reason: More stiff/holds shape better.

Check your local Craigs List. There is a guy who is selling fully body male and female for $50.

I have also made a Mannequin out of black PVC pipe. Your local Home Depot should have everything. FYI it will be standing at attention.....PVC has its limits
