Man of Steel (Pre-release)

So we pretty much get a "Pick your Daddy issues, totally mom free!" pack of teasers going on here, eh? Yay for maintaining the status quo that mothers don't mean jack sh** to super heroes.

Also, I'm not happy that this film will introduce not only shaky cameras, but also camera zooms and auto focus. And here I thought the steady looking photography from Zack Snyder's previous works was one of his highlights. Now I feel like I've got to watch Superman Returns just to enjoy the nice film-like look.

The teasers left me feeling 'meh.' It seems so much like a contemporary stereotypical superhero origin... complete with emo angst, washed out colors and father figure speech. It's just so bland and while the overdubbed speech is supposed to make you feel something - it just seems so bland that it loses any connection it should have.

The teaser could be any generic superhero. Nothing about it screams Superman, nothing stands out. Just bland, random superhero-ness.

But, we do have a year until this is released. I like Zack Snyder for the most part... but, I still feel big blue deserves to be a bright shining beacon of hope rather than a dark, muddy emo hero.

:facepalm Yay for rushing to judgement over a one minute long trailer for a movie that doesn't come out for another year. Don't get your panties in a bunch just yet. I'm sure they will show plenty of scenes in the movie of Clark with his Mommy.

That's not cool, man. Everyone knows Supes has Mommy issues too, he never knew her and was raised by his adoptive family (the Kents). Changes his clothes in a phone booth, for heavens sake. Go easy.

In fairness, the details that were out a couple years ago said it would be a long focus on Clark deciding what to do with his future (emo angst). It said that would be the bulk of the movie and that he'd ultimately decide to be superman (duh!).

Now, i'm sure Mom will factor in as well, however when the fathers are Costner and Crowe, it's not hard to err on that side since a good chunk of change is invested there.

Maybe that's not how it turned out, but there's no other evidence at this point either. Apparently they showed a good deal more at Comic Con, but the vast majority of people haven't seen that as of yet.

I have to admit, I can't see where the people who got all excited over this trailer got the excitement from. Not saying they aren't justified in their feelings, just that I don't get it. Handful of shots him roaming docks and on a boat and then a shot of superman flying straight up and it's not even a good shot of superman. It actually reminded me of the end of smallville - god forbid we ever show the guy in the full suit. Forgetting the fact that the teaser poster out now is the guy in the suit...

If their goal was to let people know Superman would be out summer 2013, mission accomplished. If it was to get people excited, not so much.

You give me a rotten apple, I'm going to say your apple is rotten even if it did come from a batch of perfectly fresh and tasty apples. If the film is different, I will naturally address it as such. But this teaser is trying to sell me a movie, and all I see in it is daddy issue this and daddy issue that and no female character period. If I was just a Superman fan, I would most likely have a difference o opinion. But as it stands, I'm all "MAN"'d out by all these male super heroes that we keep getting on screen.

To be fair, the only character they even showed was Clark.

Sound dominates picture, so one of the daddies are there as well. If you're just going to go by what you see, you should discount James Earl Jones' performance as Darth Vader's voice.

Seems fitting.

Indeed. His upcoming presence is established with the right amount of footage and intrigue.

Less is more. And there isn't just enough of that anymore ;).

So, as I said yesterday, I watched the Jor-El trailer online and it actually got me a bit emotional. Last night we went to see TDKR and was excited to see the Man of Steel trailer on the big screen.

Wow, was I ever surprised to hear Kevin Kostner's voice and the totally different wording.

As inspiring and uplifting as Jor-El's speech was and as much as it made me want to beat my chest, the Pa Kent speech was depressing and mundane. I can't believe THAT is the one in theaters! Such a let down and so BLAH...

I think the Costner version is very poorly edited together.

I do like the Crowe version - something about the tone of his voice has a certain Brando-ness to it... although it seems a bit rushed at the begining.

I am surprised how many people got their underoos in a bunch because they arent using any John Williams music. Did Batman Begins get this much flack for not using Danny Elfman or Prince? Come on people. It's a complete new Superman, which is actually needed. Time to let the Reeves' films be on their own.

And people judging this movie off of a teaser trailer. Funny stuff. Dont see it. I love having an open seat next to me in the theater :)

QFT!! (y)thumbsup

exactly, i couldn't have said it better myself.

Well with Superman not wearing his underoos on the outside anymore the fans have to do something with all those spares. :)

You know if this film did use the Williams score it'd get criticized for relying on it instead of standing on its own. Can't win with some fandoms.

You realize you're on the internet, right? :facepalm Check out the Ain't It Cool talkbacks if you want to read some real flak.

You might want to get a helmet if you think anyone in this thread doesn't haven't a love or respect for the character... and that we're not going to discuss it heavily. Doesn't mean we're not going to see it... discussion can be very healthy and often it's interesting to read actual well thought out comments that might show some insight that you missed.

...and other than one studio released promo shot and some candid shots, there's little else of this movie to comment on. So, yeah - we're going to judge it on this trailer. What would we judge it on!?!? I'll make my comments on this trailer... and the next trailer and the next trailer and whatever else we see of it all.

If you're happy throwing your money blindly at something... well, that's up to you.

There's a difference between discussing the trailer(s) and saying you are not going to see the film because they arent using music from a previous film that has absolutely nothing to do with this film. That is what I was talking about. I am all about discussing the trailers. Shoot, I am one of the geeks that downloaded it and watched it frame by frame. I'm just not ready to say the movie will be good or bad based on the first teaser a year before the release of the film. I will go see it even after multiple trailers and base my judgement of how good or poor it is after seeing the complete movie on the big screen.

And I've been to Aint it Troll News. Yeah, they are awful over there just for the sake of trying to one up each other :D
